Description

Parasitic nematodes seek out suitable hosts by swimming in the thin film of water on soil particles. Nemaslug is a unique product, containing microscopic worms (nematodes) which seek out slugs and stop them feeding on your plants within 3 days and then kill them.

The Nematodes are supplied in a pack of 30 million and are a natural predator to slugs, to treat a area of 100 m2. Best results are achieved by applying in the evening to moist but well-drained soils; control may be less successful in heavy soils, such as clay. Live healthy slugs will even eat other slugs that are still alive after being poisoned by slug pellets containing metaldehyde, as will predatory beetles. You just apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 5ºC (41ºF) and ensure the soil does not dry out for at least two weeks after applying nematodes.Product user instructions were easy to follow although I did feel a bit of a numpty watering my entire garden. If you start applying nemaslug early in the season, you can target the young slugs growing under the ground. The natural active ingredient, ferric phosphate, is harmless to wildlife, humans and the environment. These green wonders shoot up, not out, saving space while promising a harvest that could make any green thumb boast. Why does the nematode biological control ( Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) work for some gardeners but not all? They contain ferric phosphate or iron III phosphate, which affects the calcium metabolism in the gut system of snails and slugs causing them to stop feeding and die within three to six days. They occur naturally in soils in areas prone with molluscs and are very active when observed under microscope.

Like life and nature, of course it is more complicated than simply pouring nematode worms onto the soil to kill slugs. Mr Fothergill’s sources our seeds and plants from reputable suppliers, ensuring that they meet the highest of standards. Most slugs feed in or on the soil surface, but keeled slugs ( Milax species) live and feed mostly in the root zone.
