About this deal

A tale for anyone who has ever lived outside looking in, especially from that alien country called adolescence. A funny, heartfelt story from a wise guy who happens to be a girl. If you've ever fallen in love, if you've ever had your heart broken, this story is your story."

And it was lovely to meet Doria and Yasmina. Their relationship was the best thing of all. Doria’s pride in her mother and how she was working to support them both. Yasmina’s confidence in her daughter, tempered with concern and uncertainly about what the future might hold. Parmi ceux-ci, on notera : "La Zonzonnière" en 1999, "RTT et Rumeurs" en 2002 et "Rien que des mots" en 2004.The difference with her parents’ generation and their children’s, says Guène, is that they accepted not being considered French because they hadn’t grown up in France. “But I was told that I was French, a child of the republic. It was an unkept promise.” If I didn’t have personality, I would have been eaten alive. In retrospect, I realised how difficult and brutal the media coverage was. I was the first of my kind and was treated like a court jester, a freak.” Dad, he wanted a son. For his pride, his reputation, his family honor, and I’m sure lots of other stupid reasons.”

The title of this book, Kiffe kiffe demain, must give translators nightmares. The problem is that it’s a play on words, and not just on any normal words, but ghetto slang. “ Kif kif” is vernacular roughly meaning “same ‘ole, same ‘ole”; “ kiffer” is vernacular meaning “to like/love”. The title has a bittersweet tang derived from the opposing feelings of despair (“same ‘ole shit tomorrow”) and hope (“loving tomorrow”). That title must also give those tight-arsed asshats at the French Academy nightmares. “But zis is ghetto Frrench! Quelle horreur!” We tell ourselves, they went through all that and we are still treated the same way. The question now is how to deal with the anger [we feel].” Just Like Tomorrow" (2006), " Dreams from the Endz" (2008), and " Bar Balto" (2012) by Faïza Guène, are available from Penguin, translated by Sarah ArdizzoneGuène says that at the time, she was constantly asked what it was like to live in a violent, disenfranchised suburb. But her experience was not one of violence, instead, it was one of a tightly knit community. Guène finds the images from these matches, 20 years apart, enlightening. Ladj Ly’s scene on the Champs Elysees “means so much more than just the match; [it] represents an ideal of what the spirit of unity should be,” she says. Faïza Guène (born 7 June 1985) is a French writer and director, best known for her two novels, Kiffe kiffe demain and Du rêve pour les oufs. She has also directed several short films, including Rien que des mots (2004).
