Description

Philip Neame commanded D Company, one of the battalion’s three 100-strong rifle companies, and in this compelling book he tells their story. The book is very readable and well-illustrated with thirty two black and white photographs and some excellent maps. On 21 May, 3 Commando landed at San Carlos on East Falklands and a week later defeated the Argentinian garrison at Goose Green. Michael Jones is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a member of the British Commission for Military History and the author of twelve books ranging from the Middle Ages to the Second World War.

When 3 Commando Brigade landed at San Carlos on 21 May to retake the islands he commanded the newly formed J Company in 42 Commando and was in Stanley to see the Argentinian surrender. As well as the gritty stuff spent time on the human aspect, including Royal Marines who had several drafts south, and some who had settled there permanently. The captain, guessing his intentions, drolly asked: "Perhaps you would like me to sail up and down a bit?My first book is the result of journalistic good luck: of being in the right place at the right time.

Taking the form of a number of set-piece interviews, this is perhaps the best book, for my money, in understanding the Argentine side of the Falklands War by those who were there. Middlebrook gives the bare bones of the history of the Falklands, diplomacy, and the political side of the war to set the scene for his narrative of the military buildup and military operations.Due to the resolve of a determined Prime Minister and the resourcefulness of the Armed Forces, a Task Force, code named Operation CORPORATE, was quickly dispatched. I was privileged to meet some of the Royal Marines who took part in the liberation of this remote South Atlantic archipelago and this book is a powerful and moving tribute to them. In this book Curtis, describes his gruelling experiences in the Falklands and some of his SAS operations. It exposes the international intrigue involving US President Ronald Reagan and his ally Margaret Thatcher, and the covert military operations including a daring British special forces attack on the South American mainland.

If you love nonfiction and want to be a peeping Tom in the lives of peaceful protesters you should definitely read this book.

In the case of the UK that image was maybe prolonged – it was given an afterlife, a kind of zombie-life. Middlebrook not only gives an account of what happened and analysis of how and why things happened, he includes accounts from participants (unfortunately just from the British and the Falklanders, but not because he didn't try to get accounts from the other side).
