Description

Do not use this medicine on warts with hair growing from them or on warts on the face, in or on the genital (sex) organs, or inside the nose or mouth. Also do not use on moles or birthmarks. To do so may cause severe irritation.

Diabetes—Use with caution. May cause severe redness or ulceration, especially on the hands or feet.

Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of salicylic acid topical in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related blood vessel disease, which may require caution in patients receiving salicylic acid topical. Breast Feeding Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco. Other Medical Problems

Salicylic acid poisoning (overdose) with topical preparations is rare. Symptoms of poisoning include confusion, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, rapid breathing, continuing ringing or buzzing in ears, severe drowsiness. Precautions when using topical salicylic acid preparations

Plaster

Protect areas surrounding the affected area by applying petroleum jelly around the periphery of the area to be treated. Work up a lather with the soap, using hot water, and scrub the entire affected area with a washcloth or facial sponge or mitt. Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Any other topical acne preparation or preparation containing a peeling agent (eg, benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, sulfur, or tretinoin [vitamin A acid]) The availability of salicylic acid has been demonstrated by applying the gel to the normal skin of human volunteers, whereupon the salicylic acid produced a marked irritant effect similar to that of existing preparations. In clinical use, its application will, of course, be restricted to the hyperkeratotic lesions.

Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch. Once a week, gently rub away the treated surface using an emery board, as provided, or pumice stone used only for this purpose, before re-applying the gel. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Salicylic acid can be absorbed through the mother's skin. The risks and benefits will need to be discussed with your doctor before using any preparations containing salicylic acid.Furthermore, even when the film appears to dry completely, a proportion of the salicylic acid remains in solution within the vehicle, thus permitting continued release of the keratolytic, which may otherwise be entrapped within the dried collodion-like film. The gel yields a robust flexible film which is firmly anchored to the skin, and can therefore be used, even on the sole of the foot, without the added protection of a plaster.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. First, soak the corn, callus, or wart in warm water for about 5 minutes to soften the treatment area. Dry thoroughly. Your doctor may direct you to use a pumice stone, callus file, or emery board to carefully remove the top dead layers of skin after soaking and before applying the medication. This dead skin removal is only to help the medication work better. Do not try to rub the wart or callus off. Salicylic acid preparations come in many forms and strengths. Available dosage forms include cream, gel, lotion, ointment, pads, plaster, shampoo, cleanser and topical solution. Strengths of salicylic acid preparations range from 0.5% up to 30%. The form and strength chosen depends on the condition that is being treated. Repeat every 48 hours as needed for up to 14 days, or as directed by your doctor, until the corn or callus is removed.Inflammation, irritation, or infection of the skin—Use of this medicine may cause severe irritation if applied to inflamed, irritated, or infected area of the skin. For corns and calluses—Repeat one or two times a day as needed for up to 14 days, or as directed by your doctor, until the corn or callus is removed. Salicylic acid works by softening keratin, a protein that forms part of the skin structure. This helps to loosen dry scaly skin making it easier to remove. When salicylic acid is used in combination with other medicines it takes off the upper layer of skin allowing the additional medicines to penetrate more effectively. The use of topical salicylic acid formulated in simple dosage forms at high concentrations and in evaporative vehicles designed to concentrate in use, thereby localising the keratolytic precisely over circumscribed small areas of skin, is commonplace. It has become exceedingly popular with doctors and patients alike, where its safety and efficacy have been very well established through widespread use over many decades.
