The characters created, which are based on some real documented experiences, feel authentic and are well developed. Alongside the three main characters, there are some important interactions they have with ‘supporting’ characters from both the surrounding community and beyond. I really liked that it was included that there was still prejudice in England towards the Jewish community; England wasn’t painted as a solely peaceful country for them to escape to. It is important to recognise this. I really do believe this is a book that should be on every classroom shelf. US special envoy Earl Harrison heads a delegation to the displaced persons' camps in Germany. Following World War II, several hundred thousand Jewish survivors are unable to return to their home countries and remain in Germany, Austria, or Italy. The Allies establish camps for displaced persons (DPs) for the refugees. Most Jewish DPs prefer to emigrate to Palestine but many also seek entry into the United States. They remain in the DP camps until they can leave Europe. Harrison's report underscores the plight of Jewish DPs and leads to improved conditions in the camps. At the end of 1946 the number of Jewish DPs is estimated at 250,000. Reports suggest that if the first exchanges go well, and Hamas can locate more female hostages or children, there will be further releases on both sides. Some sources have suggested the ceasefire could last up to 10 days as a result. It’s the story that’s researched and shared by the excellent @HolocaustLake and that was dramatised in a recent BBC drama. But @tompalmerauthor caps them all. The best children’s fiction book I’ve yet read about the Holocaust After The War manages to be vividly engaging both as history education and as a human story – eye-opening, exciting, hugely touching. Beautifully structured and written – ending on a marvellous image of take-off – it may be aimed at 9-14 year-olds, but no-one should miss it. The UCDP state-based and Correlates of War series do not include such events. It is for this reason that they do not show the jump in 1994 that marks the Rwandan genocide. Despite that victory, Russia’s assault forced Germany to move two corps from the Western Front to the Eastern, contributing to the German loss in the Battle of the Marne. The bloodshed on the battlefields of the Western Front, and the difficulties its soldiers had for years after the fighting had ended, inspired such works of art as “ All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque and “ In Flanders Fields” by Canadian doctor Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. In the latter poem, McCrae writes from the perspective of the fallen soldiers: Like its predecessor, Wild Frontier, After the War contains elements of Celtic music. The Israeli defence minister, Yoav Gallant, has described the ceasefire as “a short respite, at the end of which the fighting will continue intensely”. To answer the question of how many people die in conflicts today, and how this has changed over time, we can turn to a number of different datasets. Tom: After the War is for children aged 10 plus. I wrote it with selected Year 5 Grasmere School pupils, but a few Y5s might find the subject matter too intense. The Y5s I worked with said they wanted to know what happened in the Holocaust. They wanted the facts so they can understand. So I made the book more about the facts than trying to evoke intense emotional reactions. Whilst the trauma and loss of their early years remained with them, many of ‘The Boys’ settled in the UK and went on to have productive and fulfilled lives, families and many children and grandchildren. A significant number of ‘The Boys’ remain active and committed to Holocaust education and we have had the pleasure of working closely with them.

This summer, I travelled in the footsteps of the 300 Windermere Children, who came from Auschwitz to Ambleside over 75 years ago. Along with headteacher Simon Robinson, I cycled 30 miles from Carlisle airport to Ullswater; canoed 10 miles up Ullswater and then fell ran the 15 miles (and 1000 metre climb) from Ullswater to Windermere. Very exciting news that the Duchess of Cambridge met with some of the meeting Windermere Children, their families and Trevor Avery. The vocal campaign led by the families has been a significant factor in pushing Netanyahu to accept a deal with Hamas, an organisation he has sworn to “crush”. Netanyahu hailed the return of the Israeli hostages, among them an 85-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl.
