Even though this book is fictional and there's already the Titanic movie, there was something about reading this book that made me stop and think of the tragedy of it and what the people on it must have felt and endured. But the Titanic is filled with distractions, romance, and all sorts of obstacles, and the job may be easier said than done. New players, several who are in danger and one who’s a monster, join the series’ original characters. Unlike the rest of them, Emilie had all the privilege in the world, and that privilege was more than just wealth. As he flees from the law with everything to lose, Kyle Fasano is about to discover that every decision in life has consequences, no matter the odds.

Adiba Jaigirdar, author of one of TIME 's Best YA books of all time and winner of the YA Book Prize 2022, gives Titanic an Ocean's 8 makeover in this nail-biting heist set onboard the infamous ship. The only thing that managed to partially grab my attention was the fact that the Titanic had started to sink, but by then, the only aspect that somewhat grabbed my attention was that half of the main cast died. You have to center that experience according to the setting and it's no surprise that the execution was lackluster given that Jaigirdar didn't even spend three pages giving us any setting description to work with. It’s impossible to overlook the intersectionality between people of color and their station in life, and that the comparative few who were aboard would most likely be found among the steerage. But careless mistakes, old grudges, and new romance threaten to jeopardize everything they’ve worked for and put them in incredible danger when tragedy strikes.

Hinnah was also one of my favourite characters and I found it particularly tense when she gets trapped in a room on the ship. maybe talking about how Hinnah felt like her body/style was always being policied, but that above sentence leads a lot up to interpretation. Historical fiction doesn't have enough of a lens on the experiences of BIPOC people but the rep we found in this book was painfully lackluster. I’m not sure if anyone actually gets together in this story or if there are other possible couples).

I stopped at 53% and still wouldn’t be able to tell you anything deep about them because we learned nothing of their background apart from a couple small things. There’s so many statistics involved with the Titanic, big numbers create big numbers after all, and if you’re like me, as you’re making your way through the story, facing an ever-dwindling page count, the direness of the situation starts to set in. Find out the answers to these questions and more in this fascinating inside look at a dedicated councillor's career. Perfect for fans of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Girl in the Blue Coat, this high-seas heist from the author of The Henna Wars is an immersive story that makes readers forget one important detail— the ship sinks. They couldn’t be more different and yet they have one very important thing in common: their lives depend on breaking into the vault and capturing the Rubiyat. Even from the perspective of culture, South Asians place a huge value on community and family, idk, I'm gonna leave this one for the Pakistanis to speak on but I found the portrayal very uncomfortable. Given Jaigirdar's background, I had hoped for more nuance in how she presented her South Asian characters but the whole reason Hinnah gets kicked out of her family was that she was too. In her utterly understandable attempt to bypass an awful trope while maintaining some realism, Jaigirdar, unfortunately, forfeits a genuinely uplifting and satisfying ending.
