I would like to add a trigger warning for a lot of gross things being said about rape victims, which are called out, obviously. Male Football Player Students saying "make me a sandwich" whenever a female student speaks up in class. Dear Jesus- I was torn between puking and laughing hysterically. This is a published book, in a bookstore, that costs money. It's basically a Tumblrite's "AND THEN THE WHOLE BUS CLAPPED" story that you have to spend money to read (unless, like me, you got it from a library). You can release the book whenever you like, to suit your personal and business plans, rather than being beholden to a publishing timeline. My only complaint about this book - and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 - is that the story itself relies so heavily on the feminist aspect that the parts in between, where we're just focusing on Viv's daily life, friendships, romance, etc., fall short a little. The writing felt very young at times, and I actually had to remind myself several times that Viv was a junior in high school, because a lot of her wording and inner monologues just felt more like they were coming from a 14- or 15-year-old, at most. second half of this book: FEMINIST CITY INTERSECTIONAL GLORY GIRLS BEING GIRLS TOGETHER AND BRINGING EACH OTHER UP FOR LIFE I LOVE IT and also a fair bit more making out than is my ideal

Moxie is a book that all teens and young adults NEED to read. It should be discussed in academia, it is an extremely important book. I especially want to recommend it to teens looking for empowerment and encouragement to share their voice. This book is getting a lot of hype for being a “feminist YA novel” and while it is entirely true that this is prime feminist literature for teens, I think the ultimate take away is that your voice, no matter how small, no matter how many people you stand against or how powerless you may feel, your voice is stronger. And I think everyone can use that reminder.

Viv’s reaction to her mum’s boyfriend is more nuanced in the book, and also comes to a more sensitive end. However, I love that in the movie we get more of John (though him being played by Clark Gregg doesn’t hurt on that!) and that it feels a little more satisfying. In the book, Viv is only grudgingly giving him a chance. In the movie, she’s angrier but also we get to see her spend time with him and realise that she’s possibly taking out her feminist anger (and fear about things changing with her mum, I’m sure) on him. Viv’s mum being cooler in the movie is a nice touch – she is more in touch with her “misspent youth” and less ashamed of it. I think Viv’s connection with it makes more sense that way. I absolutely LOVED this book, way more than I anticipated. I originally wasn’t sure when I’d get to it, it just wasn’t high on my TBR, but after a sexist review, I knew I had to make it a priority and boy, did I make the right decision.

MicroBook Magic

I was chatting to my friend about how people seemed reluctant to commit to writing a book — and my friend suggested maybe people were just a little overwhelmed right now. And so MicroBook Magic was born in October 2022. Just four weeks later, the first 11 people were writing their MicroBooks. One change I don’t like is that the principal is no longer Mitchell Wilson’s father – this is an aspect I thought lent the book a nice angle. I can sort of see why removing it allows the movie to focus more on feminism and less about favouritism and “the promise of a young athlete”, and also removes the comments at the end about how awful he was as a principal. But the aspects of Emma and Claudia trying to complain about his son could really have been done so well. Feminist Rage

Let’s talk about that underlying rage that Viv feels, and the aspects of feminism we see. In the book, it is much quieter, and I loved that the movie stepped it up. But we do lose the aspect of other girls doing something under the name Moxie, and I love that element in the book. The movie has a lot of discussion about if a group can do something and actually forms a group, but it doesn’t have anyone really doing something major without Viv being somewhat involved. She gets more control in the movie. I am also wary of the higher level of rage that the movie displays – Viv is SO angry. This transfers over to her mum without any of the nicer parts we get in the book. We also see a much higher level of property damage. While I don’t in any way think that the movie is encouraging this, I am always wary of people thinking that is how to get heard. However, that rage also feels more realistic. While in some ways the sexism is dialled down compared to the book, the Moxie answer is dialled up, and that felt true to how I feel reading about it, or watching it. Calling out these actions is really important.

But wait—where did all this come from, exactly?

All the resources are available in multiple formats: written, audio, and video with closed captions and transcripts. There’s also a very accelerated timeline in the movie, which is sad in some ways, but honestly necessary to the pace of the movie. It just wouldn’t be possible to drag it out like you can in a book. On rereading, the book felt slow in comparison because there is SO MUCH TIME between issues. The rage is more at a gentle simmer rather than at full burn. When I was 6 years old, I got the slipper* for daydreaming in class when I should have been writing. That was the start of my rebellion against “what writers do” and also against being bored. INTERSECTIONALITY! Vivian is given a firsthand lesson in the problematic aspects of "white feminism" and learns how to take the extra steps needed to ensure complete inclusion of all women (not just the white girls). There are some things missing in the movie that really don’t matter – like Viv’s grandparents. I’m sad they’re not there, but you can’t put everything into a movie, so they make sense to not make the cut.
