Description

It's a rummage-bin of motley, worn-out, subjects-of-the-Queen, all struggling with agonizing inner concerns--their duties, obligations, and lusts. Le Carré realised that artful complexity, creative bafflement and surprising revelation are at the core of the serious espionage novel, and these aspects are nowhere better exemplified than in Schoolboy. This ersatz-Fitzgerald mix of moralizing and mirror-looking (Jay McInerney shook and poured the shaker first) is very 80's—and in Tartt's strenuous version already seems dated, formulaic. It briefly introduced the subtle, devious George Smiley, who will later be revealed as the infinitely devious controller. Smiley instructs Westerby to become more proactive in his investigations, forcing Drake to move forward with his plans to extract Nelson.

We are given a foretaste of the dark machinations of Circus folk and a glimpse of shabby 1960s Chelsea, but it is the introduction to le Carré’s “breathtakingly ordinary” hero that makes the book so memorable.More Hamburger icon An icon used to represent a menu that can be toggled by interacting with this icon. First-novelist Tartt goes muzzy when she has to describe human confrontations (the murder, or sex, or even the ping-ponging of fear), and is much more comfortable in transcribing aimless dorm-room paranoia or the TV shows that the malefactors anesthetize themselves with as fate ticks down. Circus investigations in London reveal that Lizzie Worthington previously lived in Laos as the mistress of Tiny Ricardo and was temporarily recruited by Sam Collins to gather intelligence.

It’s a very good film and well worth the trouble of finding, not least for Quincy Jones’s ominous but slinky soundtrack.A few brave reviewers have expressed doubts about whether some of the elements which supposedly enrich le Carré’s later manner might not really be a kind of impoverishment, but generally the book has been covered with praise—a response not entirely to be despised, since The Honourable Schoolboy is so big that it takes real effort to cover it with anything. Unlike Bond, Smiley regards the necessary violence and mendacity of espionage as a real moral problem, rather than a fun adolescent fantasy. Here, Smiley’s actually the protagonist, brought back from retirement to sniff out the mole among the preening idiots and ambitious frauds who were formerly his rivals.

These sections are largely told from the perspective of an isolated new student whom the wounded teacher deploys as his assistant and spy.About half of Agatha Christie’s 66 mystery novels received a film treatment, whereas only eight of John le Carré’s 23 novels have made it to the big screen. George Smiley is here; Peter Guillam; Saul Enderby; Connie Sachs; Molly Meakin (all the 'regulars' who make the rest of the 'Karla saga' so great). First: it is a lengthy book; much longer than most others in the genre--and written with rich, subtle prose. And as she grows in power, she muses that “not even Odysseus could talk his way past [her] witchcraft. I first encountered my mother’s copy of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in the house as a teenager, but I didn’t read the book until I was an adult.
