Obviously, there is no real portafilter here. Instead, there is a small basket filter, that can take around 12-15 grams of coffee. I have found that the funnel that comes with the Aeropress works great for adding grounds.

This brewer has many things going for it but speed is not one of them. Especially not when paired with a hand grinder. It can easily take 5-8 minutes to make a single shot, which is pretty damn slow. The only thing I can be a little bit worried about is the rubber ring sitting on the shower screen. A little bit of misalignment and I fear that an accident could happen. Hopefully, (like with the Aeropress) it’s easy and cheap to get a replacement. Well, you will certainly be able to produce extremely delicious espresso. And by that, I mean shots that are far superior to what you are served in mediocre coffee shops. There’s not a lot to dislike about this handheld espresso maker. It is perfect whilst on the go or to make espresso at home. However, at home, you may be looking for something a little bigger that can handle more than one cup at a time. In this case, manual or semi-automatic coffee makers may be more up your street.

Cafflano Kompresso reviews

The Cafflano Kompresso portable espresso maker is the brain child of Korean coffee lover, Hangsan Yoon. Hangsan decided that he didn’t want to pay for expensive coffee from coffee shops orsplash out on a big complex machine. So, instead, he created this cheap, portable device.

If you’re familiar with dosing, tamping and brewing espresso it should be pretty easy to start using the Cafflano Kompresso. The device doesn’t feel heavy duty and at first, I was a bit afraid to exert full pressure using it. It turns out that it can easily handle both normal use and more extreme scenarios where almost all my body weight is placed on the device. This has been the case a few times where I have used too fine a grind.

Cold-brewed espresso (ice espresso)

You just need to dismantle the device and then wash and rinse the parts. It should take less than 5 minutes, and you’re done. Which, as manual espresso makers go, is pretty impressive. The recipe is almost like a normal espresso shot. Except you tamp extra hard and allow a 1-minute pre-infusion. Well, and of course you use cold water instead of the usual 200 F. This dinky little espresso maker needs gound coffee. So, for best results, you will need a coffee grinder to go alongside it. Whilst the Aer oP resshas taken the portable espresso maker market by storm. Although, the coffee produced is not a true espresso – there isn’t enough pressure – it is pretty close.

Getting the best-tasting espresso shots from this coffee maker will take patience and a bit of dedication. And not everyone is going to want to do that which is totally fine. That has all changed in the last couple of years with the introduction of manual espresso makers such as the ROK and the Flair Espresso Maker.

Update May 2019: After one and a half year the Kompresso is still going strong. The build quality is solid) Ease of use The Uniterra Nomad is also not the most portable device, though it is smaller and lighter than the Flair. It puts that heft to good use by looking like a little piece of metal art sitting on your desk while cranking out an excellent, creamy espresso. The newest product in the line-up is the Kompresso; the company’s first stab at the espresso scene. As if all this wasn’t already pretty cool. The Kompresso has one more ace in its sleeve: It’s capable of making cold-brewed espresso. Is it easy to use? Straight out the box, no. It takes a little bit of getting used to but once you’re there you will be enjoying tasty, consistence coffee. Aside from that, it’s hard to come up with any real negative arguments against this tiny espresso maker. The Cafflano Kompresso is a lightweight device, mostly consisting of BPA-free plastic. The naked portafilter and shower screen are made out of etched metal, though. One was for the Cafflano Klassic All-in-One Portable Pour-Over coffee maker. And the other was for Cafflano Kompact Simple Pressing Hot & Cold Brewer. The rubber rings designed to prevent leakages are the only part that looks like they might fail over time. But they are easily and cheaply replaced if this does happen. It should be mentioned that complaints of issues with the Kompresso are very rare. We didn’t encounter any problems but were only using it for a week. Using the Cafflano Kompresso feels like a lot of steps. Weigh and grind the coffee, pre-heat the Kompresso, tamp the grounds, assemble, pre-infuse, extract, enjoy. The grind basket takes around 15g or 3.5 teaspoons of coffee. So it should be easy enough to grind at home, then take it with you – even if you want to make multiple espressos! Depending how organised you are you can weigh and grind as many “doses” as you need for the day then store them in individual containers and you’re good to go. So, for our final thoughts on the Cafflano Kompresso review: it really is hard to argue with at this price point. Any espresso lover would be chuffed with this device.
