When the yacht owners are on-board, or other people have chartered (aka rented) out your boat for a holiday, you are “on charter.” Generally, Americans visiting Europe get 3 months visa-free travel, while Europeans get 6 months in the U.S. In 1935 Evelyn was sold and for the next 30 years she had various owners along the coast who used her for fishing and recreational purposes with additions such as the fitting of a marine engine, a coachroof with cooking stove, a single bunk and heads. If you work on a sailboat, there’s a lot more to learn about all the rigging & sails, but that can be done if you’re interested. Stewardess The fishery is within the Truro Port Fishery, an area of 2721 acres, which includes all parts of the Truro and Falmouth Harbours and the bed of the Truro, Fal and Tresillian Rivers.

Another huge benefit is the ability to travel. Hopping around beautiful islands of the Caribean and Mediterranean, and while working most of the time, it’s possible to escape and enjoy these locations during time off. You don’t actually have to be a sailor to work on a sailing yacht (especially if you work the interior), but you have to be willing to learn. Evelyn was built in 1898 on the beach at Yard Point on the Restronguet Creek by Frank Hitchens, a master shipwright, with the assistance of his son Tom. Another son, James Hitchens a fisherman, had a daughter called Evelyn and it was after her that the boat was named. There was no definite design as many came from Porthleven, Mousehole, Looe and Mevagissey areas, and started life with a lug rig (foresail and mizzen)appropriate for their purpose, usually pilchard driving. On moving tothe Falmouth/Truro area, they were normally changed to gaff-rigged cutter to enable them to dredge for oysters. To the trained eye, these boats are easily recognised, with a Porthleven boat usually being full-bodied with a fine run aft, whereas the Looe and Mevagissey boats typically had finer lines and were a little deeper. Yachting is one of the oldest industries in the world and still runs largely in a social context — the more people you meet, the better your chances. Many people use the good money they save while working “in-season” to travel for fun in the off-season. It’s a nice perk that’s included when you work on yachts! How Much Can You Make?

There will be more to your boat, in rigging, maintenance, and sailing. Some find it fun, while others find it intimidating. You must see if it suits your passion. But if you can fit the persona of a servant when guests or owners are on board (which is usually only 2-8 weeks per year), and you can clean like a maniac, you will make great income traveling the world on mega yachts. Living The Yachting Life If guests stay up late drinking, you take turns with other crew members to wait on them and bartend as late as the last guest.

Some boats charter (are available for rent) and others do not. If you want to work hard and earn more money, I recommend working on a boat that charters. When meeting with crew agents and interviewing with captains, be sure to iron your clothes, have groomed hair, be clean, awake and presentable.

There are around 37,000 yacht crew members employed on the 6,000+ superyachts around the world. And that doesn’t even count the smaller yachts and sailboats out there too. The Falmouth Working Boat Association (FWBA) was formed in the late winter/early spring of 1978/79 when the owners of the working boats felt that an association should be formed which would be the governing body whose main aim was ‘to preserve and encourage the unique traditions of the gaff-rigged oyster dredgers’. The Heritage Working Boats Group began life under the stewardship of British Waterways at the turn of the millennium. Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery, the corporation was able to restore ten working narrowboats, and while most would remain static in the Waterways museums, a handful were deemed navigable. Two methods of dredging, with no mechanical means, are used by boats propelled by oars or working under sail. Although some boats may be fitted with an engine these can only be used to reach the dredging areas. Dredges are shaped bags made from metal rings towed astern by the boat and a dredging run is known as a drift. A sailing boat may make up to eight or nine drifts during dredging time and a rowing boat thirty or forty drifts.Living relics from a byegone age, the Falmouth Working Boats make an impressive sight, and there can be few who are not inspired by the beauty of these powerful gaff-rigged cutters under sail. Outwardly, little has changed in nearly 200 years, their existencebeing a direct result of the local harbour byelaws prohibiting the dredging of oysters by any mechanical means. Working under sail and oar during the winter months from October to March, these unique boats have survived to become the last of their kind in Europe. The size of the working fleet has fluctuated over the years, its fortunes directly related to the health of the delicate oysters which are ever prey to disease and pollution.

Ft. Lauderdale is a decent place to look for work in the winter, but if you don’t have a job by December and want a change of scenery, you can fly down to English Harbour, Antigua or Simpson Bay, St. Maarten (a larger community) and you might be able to snag a job for a holiday trip. Summer Season: Mediterranean & New England At IYT in Ft. Lauderdale, where I went, you’ll wear real firefighting suits complete with oxygen masks and fight REAL fires on a fake ship and then use survival suits, inflate an emergency raft and jump into a pool. Quite memorable! This doesn’t mean it isn’t worth going to Florida though, there are tons of foreign-flagged vessels to make the job prospects real. And many American owners register their boats offshore, for tax reasons. Informal Networking For Yacht Jobs Today, my friend Katie shares her experience working on yachts, along with tips on how to find yacht jobs. It’s a cool way to earn money traveling the world! Here’s Katie: The sea will forever be a part of my soul, and sailing through those starry nights with a 360-degree horizon is a meditative place I return to. I have been forever changed by my time at sea. But if you can handle the workload, you’ll return with great memories, new friends, and a fat savings account. ★ The oyster dredging season lasts from the beginning of October until the end of March leaving the summer for other work, such as inshore fishing, and traditionally for regattas and for racing. Racing their dredging boats in the village and town regattas around the Fal Estuary became a sport for skippers, their crews and families and became embedded as an essential part of the lifestyle of the working boat community. Interest has grown over this racing aspect of the working boat and the current fleet of boats that regularly race have evolved from this heritage.
