Antacids such as aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can reduce the absorption of many other medicines from the gut, which may make the other medicines less effective. If you are taking any other medicines, get advice from your pharmacist before taking this antacid. Antacids should preferably not be taken at the same time of day as any other medicines. In general, any interactions can be avoided if you do not take this antacid in the two hours before and after taking any other medicine. Simeticone (or simethicone) is a type of medicine called an antiflatulent. It's used to treat farting (flatulence), trapped wind and bloating, although we cannot be certain if it really works for these symptoms.Large doses of this product may trigger or aggravate intestinal obstruction and ileus in patients at risk (see section 4.4). Aluminium hydroxide may cause constipation and magnesium salts overdose may cause hypomotility of the bowel; large doses of this product may trigger or aggravate intestinal obstruction and ileus in patients at higher risk such as those with renal impairment, or the elderly. Pregnant women should get advice from their doctor, pharmacist or midwife before using this medication. The manufacturer states that the safety of the medicine in pregnancy has not been established. However, antacids are generally considered safe to take during pregnancy, provided you do not exceed the recommended dose, and simeticone is not absorbed into the bloodstream from the gut.
