Description

Ideally, you want to find an outrigger that is A) affordable while still being B) very durable and well-designed. If you’ve got a RAILBLAZA base system on your kayak, then you’re good to mount this kayak outrigger in seconds. It’s designed to be compatible with most kayak brands and sizes, so you can use it for fishing, hunting, sailing, or just casual paddling. The pre-installed threading makes it a breeze to mount and dismount without having to remove the RAILBLAZA base. First, sit-in sea kayaks are incredibly difficult to get in and out of, which means they aren’t suitable at all for beginners who may already be nervous when launching and landing their boat. The arms aren’t adjustable or extendable, but the system is lightweight and user-friendly. It’s the perfect outrigger system for an inexpensive kayak (like your basic Pelican), turning a cheap sit-on-top kayak into an ultra-stable fishing platform. As long as it’s mounted well, you’ll find it’s nearly impossible to flip thanks to these bad boys. However, if you plan on using your kayak outrigger mostly on saltwater, make sure to buy one made with saltwater-resistant materials (like marine-grade aluminum and PVC). Durability

It’s definitely the priciest outrigger system on our list, and you do have to buy the coolers separate. However, any hunter or angler who gives this outrigger a try is sure to love it! Although it's not for everyone, the more adventurous kayak anglers can launch their kayaks in the surf zone to access the prime fishing areas. In this video, we're gonna look at how to launch a kayak in the surf, although I would highly recommend you take a surf kayaking course before attempting to do this yourself. Let’s say you’re planning a multi-day kayak camping trip, or you’re gearing up for a long ocean trek. You need to bring a certain amount of gear for the trip, but if you fill up the kayak too much (with too much weight), your capsize risk is exponentially higher. Not with an outrigger, though! The stabilizers actually add buoyancy along with stability, so you’ll be able to carry more gear (on the kayak or even mounted to the outrigger arm/frame) for that long trip. Pros of Kayak OutriggersAdding a kayak outrigger can be a game-changer for maxing out your stability. With a pair of outriggers, also called kayak stabilizers or kayak pontoons, you’ll have a lower risk of tipping over, no matter what. Hardshell kayak pontoons are typically made from thermoplastic/rotomolded plastic, hard PVC, or fiberglass. On the plus side, these are incredibly durable and typically last significantly longer than your average inflatable. However, they’re heavy, unwieldy, and can’t be stored, so you’ll always be using them until you hit dry land and can remove them. Material

Appearance: zander are often a greeny brown colour with dark vertical markings, similar to the perch, and a cream or white belly. Their distinctive features are a double dorsal fin, with the front fin containing hard and quite sharp rays. They also have a flat spine at the rear of the gill cover. They have two long, sharp teeth at the front that are vampire-looking in appearance. Zander have large eyes that can often be opaque, which is an adaptation to enable them to see in murky waters and take advantage of prey. As the law stands, it is illegal to return a zander or any other non-native fish species to the canal network. This is set out in the terms and conditions of our KIFR permits. Lateral line scale count: 80-87 (this is the dark row of scales along the central length of the fish's body) For example, the YakGear Kayak & Canoe Outriggers feature a deployable design. This is great for anyone who wants both speed and stability. When you want to zip across the water, lift the outrigger arms and secure them in the upraised position. When you’ve reached your destination and want to fish/hunt, you can lower the arms to the water and enjoy the added stability. Storage/Transportation On the downside, it’s a bit heavier than some of the other mounting systems, and will definitely take up a lot of your kayak’s weight capacity (so you can’t transport as much gear). However, given its design and durability, it’s well worth the added weight!

Choose Appropriate Locations and Conditions— The kayak models we review here are appropriate for recreational use on lakes and flatwater rivers in calm conditions with no whitecaps. Most do not accommodate a spray skirt (which keeps waves out but requires training to use safely) or integrate enough flotation to withstand severe conditions. Many of the sit-in models do not have separate bulkheads nor come with float bags; therefore, if they capsize, they could easily flood and sink. Consider your environment and prepare appropriately. You will want to think about the stability of the sea fishing kayak that you ultimately buy, since this will directly effect both the amount you can catch on any given trip and how often, where and when you can use your chosen boat. A more stable kayak can be more easily paddled and manoeuvred, allowing you to get to where you need to go and stay where the most fish are to be found. I would caution against looking for the cheapest kayak. Remember, when you buy cheap you buy twice. As expected, of course, movable systems tend to be pricier than fixed systems. Fixed systems are designed to be mounted to one place on the kayak and don’t offer the option to adjust placement. They’re less versatile, but cost less, too. Deployable Kayak Pontoons

Of course, another size factor to consider is the length of the outrigger arms. Typically, they’ll extend out far enough that they won’t interfere with your paddling stroke. However, for bigger/taller paddlers, you may find that some shorter outrigger arms aren’t quite long enough, and may not provide enough stability. It’s a factor to keep in mind when considering the kayak outrigger options on our list below. Compatibility If you want to get a sea fishing kayak with many features, like fishing rod holders and paddles, you should expect to pay more.

There are a number of things that you should consider when purchasing a sea fishing kayak, and I have listed out some of the key things to consider below. Material Using cheap rope or improvised lashings risk your equipment becoming dislodged during travel. The most serious risk is that the kayak or canoe may come loose entirely, and be damaged or destroyed. Even if this doesn’t happen, a loose or wobbly kayak can scratch your roof, causing significant damage to your roof. The same if true of wooden planks, or other improvised roof bars. And, when you do fit your roof bars – make sure that you are aware of your overall height, going under low bridges can prove perilous if you don’t have an accurate idea of just how tall your car has become! Transporting a sole kayak Keep it simple, sweet, and cheap with this Brocraft outrigger system! It’s designed specifically for mounting on sit-on-top kayaks, including stainless steel mounting hardware that is easily secured in place on your existing frame/mounting solutions. The 32-inch aluminum arms extend just far out enough from the side of your kayak that they won’t get in the way of your paddling, and the PVC floats offer decent buoyancy despite their small size. The best sea fishing kayaks tend to have wide and flat hull designs with a low centre of gravity. These features mean that the raft will have excellent primary stability, which keeps the kayak flat and controlled out on the water. You will have to compromise on the secondary stability though, which makes the kayak more stable in waves and choppier conditions. This is a fair compromise though, since for fishing you won’t want to go out in too turbulent sea conditions. Weight/Portability
