Description

In the second edition of this hugely popular book, Tony Merry reorganised and updated the text to include the latest initiatives in the world of counselling and psychotherapy.

I would highly recommend it to counselling and psychotherapy students and to any readers who wish to acquire a comprehensive understanding of person-centred counselling. Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling has inspired and guided thousands of counselling students since it was first published in 1999. Tony Merry's second edition of Learning and Being in Person-Centered Counselling stands out as impressively comprehensive, accessible and skilfully condensed.

I anticipate that trainees will especially welcome the additions to the Merry book about placements (chapter six, 'Training Issues: Client work and personal development') and Supervision (chapter seven). It is heavily referenced, beautifully so, and so leads you to many more sources to use for assignments (if that is your purpose, which I suspect at this level of publication it would be). It brings theory to life with its suggestions for exploring and developing person-centred values, qualities, attitudes and skills. The book invites readers to engage deeply with how they might honestly ‘live the theory’ of the person-centred approach.

I also valued the inclusion of the nineteen propositions in the Merry book, and the translations into more approachable language will, I think, be welcomed by trainees . Tony was Reader in Psychology at the University of East London and taught on postgraduate and undergraduate courses in counselling and counselling psychology. It might also de-mystify what Counselling is about and therefore help you to make the most of counselling sessions. The book Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling by Tony Merry has inspired and guided thousands of counselling students since it was first published in 1999.To give a flavour of these, Merry explores issues around many placement agencies offering time limited therapy and the difficulties trainees experience with this, offering helpful texts (including references to Brian Thorne) along the way. Many cutting edge topics are included such as discussions about human nature, multi-cultural awareness and time-limited practice. Excellant book for anyone, at any level of understanding, to develop a sound understanding of person centred history, theory and practice.

Students will find in this book a thorough grounding in person-centred theory and practice; for experienced practitioners, it will enhance their understanding and their abilities. If I could only have one book on PCT this would be it, Merry has distilled down all of the important texts into one, modern, relatively easy read here. The late Tony Merry wrote in plain English, so it's an easier way to get one's head around the theory, rather than getting caught-up in scientific psychobabble.

He co-founded the British Association for the Person-Centred Approach (BAPCA) in 1989 and was editor of the BAPCA journal Person-Centred Practice until his untimely death in August 2004. In the second edition of this hugely popular book, Tony Merry has reorganised and updated the text to include the latest initiatives in the world of counselling and psychotherapy.
