Description

As with most computers these day, the Peregrine turns on automatically once you descend to about 1m of water. And as discussed earlier, the display is super legible and easy to read.

The Shearwater Peregrine has a bright full colour 2.2” LCD display is easy to read and navigate, with its simplified operation making it a clear choice for any level of diver. With four diving modes, Air, Nitrox, 3 Gas Nitrox, and Gauge the Shearwater Peregrine has proved to be the best entry-level dive computer. As with previous Shearwaters you can upload dive logs via wireless data transfer, and get free firmware updates. The Peregrine Adventures Edition is equipped with the same features that make the Peregrine a favourite among sport divers, including a customisable full-colour display, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity for seamless data transfer, and user-friendly navigation through Shearwater’s intuitive adaptive menus. Lastly and most importantly, notice how well the screen of computer displays information in an easy to read format. It is important to follow the directions for charging/storage in the computer’s manual to ensure peak battery performance. You can set a specific time, such as three, four or five minutes, or select Adaptive for your safety stop. Adaptive takes into account whether you hit 30m or got within 5min of your NDL and adjusts the safety stop to 5min. Otherwise it chooses 3min.

I particular like the visual and vibration alerts from the Peregrine dive computer. I tend to switch off audible alarms (not that it has any) anyway as they just bug me, but the vibration is great – you can easily feel it through a wetsuit or even a drysuit. There are no parts inside the computer that are user-serviceable. Not even the battery should be changed by anyone other than an authorized dealer. However, Shearwater estimates the lifespan of its battery to be five years, depending on usage, so the temptation to change it yourself should be a rarity. Don’t try to open up your Peregrine to fix any problems yourself as your warranty will become invalid.Like the Teric, it can be wirelessly charged up – via the supplied USB wireless charging station – with each charge giving approximately 30 hours on medium brightness level. Do note that this feature is for experienced divers with an in-depth knowledge of decompression theory as well as their own personal risk tolerances and so I will advise not messing with it unless you are very sure you know what it does (hint: if you have to ask someone what settings to use here, you are not ready to use it). Under water, the Peregrine also has a look-ahead feature that lets you see the additional deco you’ll run up if you stay at your current depth for a further 5min. In my case, this is a basic requirement for any dive computer, and equally as important as Nitrox support. Setting 3 can be expected to clear faster because it will be the optimum depth in outgassing terms, but 6 provides more margin to recover control if you inadvertently ascend a little. Altitude adjustment can be set to auto or user-selected.

The most obvious alternative to the Peregrine is the Garmin Descent G1 Solar, followed by the somewhat less premium Aqualung i300c. The build quality is good on both, but the Shearwater takes the edge with a much better display. The Aqualung i300c does not have color support, for example, and I am not the biggest fan of the protective plastic cover. Broadly-used dive algorithm: the Peregrine uses Bühlmann ZHL16-C with Gradient Factors, so you won’t be ‘forced-up’ by your computer (looking at you, Suunto). The DCIEM algorithm is also available. The Shearwater Peregrine makes use of the best decompression model for scuba divers and based on this, I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
