But Maddie is honestly super annoying in this diary. She's using her father's military service for social clout and has a pretty inflated sense of importance. The good work she's doing seems more about drawing attention to herself than really helping the war effort. Ultimately, though, she realizes this about herself and does change. While Maddie is not a particularly likable narrator, her self-absorption feels true to life.

Whichever style you choose, you should try to add some creative elements too. You should think of it as a bit of a scrapbook. I had high hopes for this one because Mary Pope Osborne wrote Standing in the Light, one of my favorites in the series. However, My Secret War was just okay. I have mixed feelings about this one. SO cool. It's the journal/scrapbook of a fictional character in WWII England. Glad I finally got to it. Put it on my to read list when it was brand new ... and here it is, what. Two or three years later? You can't get to all of them right away. :XA really lovly book. A really easy and personal way for children to access a very difficult subject. Willie Beech, a lonely and deprived child, is evacuated to a tiny English village just before the Second World War, and finds himself living with reclusive widower Thomas Oakley. Finn’s great-grandfather receives a letter threatening the “revenge of Tirpitz”. They escape on a fishing boat, making the perilous journey to Norway, where they realise that facing up to the past puts their future in danger... My secret war is about a girl named Madeline and her living through world war 2 while her dad is fighting in war. Madeline goes through many obstacles with her friends Clara and Johnny and all the problems that come with having a dad in the war.

Her "voice" was very well done. Flossie seemed real. I did not know that "flipping" had ever been a British swear word. ;] Soon, the whole area is out of bounds, as the Allied forces practise their landings for D-day, preparing to invade France. But Tips, Lily's adored cat, has other ideas – barbed wire and keep-out signs mean nothing to her, nor does the danger of guns and bombs. Frantic to find her, Lily makes friends with two young American soldiers, who promise to help her. But will she ever see her cat again? Lily decides to cross the wire into the danger zone to look for Tips herself… Caption: Illustration from My Secret Diary by Marcia Williams showing star motifs. Photo source: Lisa Lacy Across the country, hundreds of people are working tirelessly to prepare for Remembrance. Here are just a few of their stories. This book is great! It is very informative and gives readers a thorough insight of how it is to live in the Second World War. A fascinating diary account of the Second World War, as seen through the eyes of a young girl. Flossie is just nine years old when, in 1939, Britain declares war on Germany and her father leaves the family home to join the army. Flossie is left to bring up her baby brother and to face a whole host of new experiences on her own. Her diary becomes an outlet for relaying all the news from at home and abroad. From the first evacuees arriving to her sweetheart's being killed in Normandy in 1944, Flossie has to endure much hardship. But her own special blend of courage, humour and fighting spirit sees her through to the Armistice, when she can welcome her dad home at last. About This Edition ISBN:
