When you pour liquid from a can, you’ll notice that it doesn’t flow evenly unless you have a second opening for air. The same holds true for the plumbing vent pipe. As water goes down a drain, air is needed to equalize the pressure in the drain line.

Check the water level

The type of flush mechanism that you have will very much depend on the type of toilet you have. Today, most domestic toilets utilise a European push button dual flush system e.g. there is a small button on the top or side of the cistern that’s split into 2, the smaller button for a short flush, the larger section for a long flush. If the flush diaphragm is split however, the pressure of the water as the diaphragm is drawn up the chamber, simply pushes through the split and does not allow any resistance. The more you flush, the bigger the split gets and the worse the issue gets. If you suspect that your toilet has a weak flush due to a vent system issue, call a plumber immediately. Vent systems are not something that you’ll be able to troubleshoot yourself, even with the help of Google and Youtube.

If you only hear a flushing sound but no water is sprayed when you flush, you are safe, and it's the next player's turn. If you get sprayed by the gush of water, you're out! To change the diaphragm simply turn off the water to the cistern, flush the toilet and soak up any remaining water in the cistern with a sponge. Once the cistern is empty, unclip the connection between the handle arm and the flush unit.Place the plunger into the toilet bowl, making sure the bell of the plunger is completely submerged in water and covers the toilet drain. Add warm water to the toilet bowl if necessary. The bowl should be no more than half full. If, after making these adjustments, you find that the water still creeps up the overflow tube, or escapes through the refill tube, then its time to repair or replace your fill valve. If you value your time, you are probably better off to replace the entire mechanism, rather than just replacing the diaphragm inside. Treatment can help improve bowel incontinence and reduce the impact it has on your life. The best treatment for you depends on what's causing the problem. However if you have a more modern flush valve and push button flush there could be several reasons why water is continuing to run into the bowl.
