Few characters are given enough time to be memorable, especially as readers are probably concentrating more on clues than character names. This book was about this man that went to jail because he was a jew and he made freinds that were in that jail and he planned with them to get out and planned because first time they got caught and then they planned agian just to get out with more people. I am reminded of one of the core messages of A Clockwork Orange which left me constantly asking, when, if ever, is it justified to remove or deprive an individual’s humanity? The chapter on frank morris was most enjoyable to listen to,not much on capone and hardly anything on tye Birdman unless I fell asleep and missed it. A true crime classic, Escape from Alcatraz recounts the history of the infamous prison on Alcatraz Island and the many men who risked their lives trying to escape it.

Bruce’s book brings to life the grim, gruesome conditions of life in lockup on Alcatraz, and the prisoners who lived there—from notorious gangster Al “Scarface” Capone to robber Frank Lee Morris, the architect of Alcatraz’s most audacious escape. Good story, not too long, reader very good, EXCEPT every 60 seconds or so, there would be a gap or delay in the readers narrative. I didn't know what to expect when I started listening to it, but it just kept getting better and better as it went on! An anonymous young woman murdered in a run-down hotel, all identifying characteristics dissolved by acid. In 1963, just weeks before the original publication of this book, the last prisoner was escorted off Devil’s Island and Alcatraz ceased to be a prison.Escape from Alcatraz is more than a series of fascinating vignettes about men who dared try to escape the country’s most notorious prison, which was widely touted as an impenetrable fortress. They also made a boat out of old shirts, so they could get across the bay because they would not make it bye swimming because it would be too cold. There are hints in the back of the book, but even so, sometimes several more leaps of logic are required before it becomes clear what, exactly, you’re supposed to be doing.

But I had to finish it considering my curiosity about Alcatraz and my fascination with prison breaks (real and metaphorical). Alcatraz history will always be intriguing and I look forward to reading more about it in the future.

The first modern comic books to be published in the US, Famous Funnies and Popular Comics, came out in 1934, the same year the Bureau of Prisons opened USP Alcatraz Island and shipped Chicago crime czar Al Capone cross-country from the federal penitentiary at Atlanta to take up residence in one of its cells. This middle-grade adaptation of an adult nonfiction book tells the story of the shipwreck and a harrowing Coast Guard rescue when four men in a tiny lifeboat overcame insurmountable odds and saved more than thirty stranded sailors.

Alcatraz - A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years is a comprehensive reference that breaks away from traditional tourist-style books. While you’re warned at the start of the book that you’ll need to ‘pay attention to everything’, there’s very little guidance about which small details are going to come back and be important. The inmates definitely escaped but after they left the island it's a mystery of what happened to them. An exhilarating combination of escape room, puzzle book and adventure story, this book is inspired by the urban craze for escape rooms as well as the history surrounding America's most infamous prison. It's 1935 and 12-year-old Moose Flanagan and his family have just moved to the infamous island that's home to criminals like notorious escapee Roy Gardner, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course, Al Capone.
