In batch experiments, 93% of the nitrogen was recovered selectively. In continuous-flow experiments, when the influent concentration was 7490 mg N L −1, the nitrogen concentration was 2960 mg N L −1 in the anode chamber, 1950 mg N L −1 in the cathode chamber, 2250 mg N L −1 in the trapped chamber after 3–5 hydraulic residence times (HRT), and the energy demand was 30.6 MJ kg N −1. In the future, membrane technology research should focus on the practical application of source-separation toilets, membrane fouling prevention, and energy consumption evaluation. This review may provide theoretical support for the resource utilization of urine collected from toilets that is based on membrane technology.
