W. Pronk, H. Palmquist, M. Biebow and M. Boller, Water Res., 2006, 40, 1405–1412 CrossRef CAS PubMed. Note that after peeing, use a bit of water to wash off the separator (not more than 10ml). We always keep a small bottle of water next to our composting toilet for this purpose. For all the fellas out there, if you’re going in for a #1, sorry, but you’ll have to get used to the idea of sitting while peeing. This way you’re making sure urine goes INTO the separator. The enclosed installation template shows possible installation options for urine drains and ventilation pipes through the wall behind the toilet or through the floor. These options enable an installation without visible pipes.

Our flagship models Marcel and Floran are handmade porcelain urine separators that are as hygienic and durable as any porcelain toilet bowl. They’re easy to install, perfect for eco-conscious homes, tiny homes, camper vans, cottages, float homes, boats, permaculture households, rural or urban spaces that envision composting toilet systems. After a short-term disaster, call your Department of Sanitation for instructions on how to dispose of the waste. Separett Tiny® has high operational reliability and is easy to install. The fan exhales the small odor that is formed despite urine separation and also contributes to a better indoor climate by constantly keeping the air in the space in motion. The fan is efficient and quiet and feels best from continuous operation. In this piece, we prepared a little guide: how to choose the best Shit & Blossom urine separator. Our goal here is to ensure your number one and number two remain the most pleasant of human experiences, all the while keeping up with the environmentally-conscious practices. Urine diversion is the single most important factor in any natural, dry toilet system. This nifty plastic urine diverter pipes the wee away from the poo, to keep your waterless composting toilet odour free and easy to maintain. The material polypropylene (PP) is insensitive to acidic cleaning agents and very resistant overall. If you really want to save money, I would like to introduce you to this alternative... I once found this idea in a forum and for the sake of completeness I would like to share it with you. In terms of volume reduction and nutrient reconcentration, use of urine collected from toilets for DCMD performs admirably. 18 More than 97% of P and K rejection was achieved when hydrolyzed urine was concentrated 17.8 times. Nevertheless, the NH 3 concentration was increased to 11.0 g N L −1, so the water generation quality was affected. An NH 3 concentration in urine is frequently high in the process of recovering water from urine, and nutrients' concentration, and this resulted in free NH 3 transfer through the MD membrane to the permeate. At our earthship in Serbia, composting and toilets go hand in hand. What makes these toilets “dry” is the fact that they DO NOT use water for transportation or treatment of collected waste (more on that later).

The most popular divider inserts for portable toilets, composting toilets and dry toilets on the market are currently: Truth is, reusing human waste isn’t brand new. Or that smelly, for that matter. In fact, we humans relied on repurposing poo for hundreds of years, especially in agriculture. So what gives? F. Volpin, J. Jiang, I. E. Saliby, M. Preire and H. K. Shon, J. Cleaner Prod., 2020, 270, 122390 CrossRef CAS. In addition to Separett, there are now also other separating inserts from Trelino. Until now, however, it was not possible to buy the separating toilet inserts separately here. That has now changed. That's why I'm introducing you to this urine separator. The urine separators work to keep your compost toilet odour-free and ensure straightforward, hassle-free toilet maintenance.

DIY Composting Toilet Dimensions

M. Ikematsu, K. Kaneda, M. Iseki and M. Yasuda, Sci. Total Environ., 2007, 382, 159–164 CrossRef CAS PubMed. The big advantage of keeping things separate is that hardly any odour is produced – unlike in a simple composting toilet, where liquid and solid matter are collected together in the same container. Many people still remember earth closets and outhouses and haven’t forgotten the smell! Fortunately, this nasal nuisance is eliminated by UDDTs. Principle of the composting toilet (dry composting toilet). How does the composting toilet actually work? Since I wrote this blog post last year, a lot has happened in the field of composting toilets, dry toilets and composting toilets. And that's a good thing.

Separett currently offers 5 different variants of divider inserts. Some of these are available in grey or blue. The following divider inserts are shown from left to right:

You Need TWO Bucket Toilets!

In a UDDT, human urine and excrement are collected separately thanks to the use of a special diverter (also known as a diversion pan or separator).

Tarpeh et al. 87 used an electrochemical stripping setup that included ED and membrane stripping to recover nitrogen from source-separated urine. In batch experiments, 93% of the nitrogen was recovered selectively. In continuous-flow experiments, when the influent concentration was 7490 mg N L −1, the nitrogen concentration was 2960 mg N L −1 in the anode chamber, 1950 mg N L −1 in the cathode chamber, 2250 mg N L −1 in the trapped chamber after 3–5 hydraulic residence times (HRT), and the energy demand was 30.6 MJ kg N −1. In addition, in the ammonium sulfate fertilizer product, there were no trace organics or elements detected. The particularly smooth surface allows dirt to almost roll off. The layout is similar to that of the Privy from Separett. The only difference is that no insert wedge is used here to extend the urine tray. The urine diverter compact is suited for stationary compost toilets with a compost pit and urinals. The urine diverter classic is perfect for every DIY composting toilet and the urine diverter classic XL offers greatest flexibility when you plan and build your own composting toilet. Always a good choice: Our classic urine diverter

This blog post is structured as follows:

I can also show you the example of the Trennto designer toilet. Trelino® oval and XL - separating inserts - latest generation Villa has high operational reliability, is easy to install and does not take up more space than a standard toilet seat. The toilet space is constantly ventilated by the toilet fan and urine is separated from other waste, which makes the toilet space odorless. The view screen hides the dry waste and is only pushed away when you sit down to use the toilet. Now that we have shed light on the basic differences, let’s see how that applies to the most common composting toilet solutions… Marcel (left) and Floran (right) S. Phuntsho, H. K. Shon, S. Hong, S. Lee and S. Vigneswaran, Rev. Environ. Sci. Biotechnol., 2012, 11, 147–168 CrossRef CAS. Membrane technologies have broad potential in methods for separating, collecting, storing, and utilizing urine collected from toilets. Recovering urine from toilets for resource utilization instead of treating it in a sewage treatment plant not only reduces extra energy consumption for the degradation of N and P but also saves energy in chemical fertilizer production, which will contribute to carbon emission reduction of 12.19–17.82 kg kg N −1 in terms of N alone. Due to its high efficiency in terms of volume reduction, water recycling, nutrient recovery, and pollutant removal, membrane technology is a promising technology for resource utilization from urine collected from toilets. In this review, we divide membrane technologies for resource utilization from urine collected from toilets into four categories based on the driving force: external pressure-driven membrane technology, vapor pressure-driven membrane technology, chemical potential-driven membrane technology, and electric field-driven membrane technology. These technologies influence factors such as: recovery targets and mechanisms, reaction condition optimization, and process efficiency, and these are all discussed in this review. Finally, a toilet with source-separation is suggested. In the future, membrane technology research should focus on the practical application of source-separation toilets, membrane fouling prevention, and energy consumption evaluation. This review may provide theoretical support for the resource utilization of urine collected from toilets that is based on membrane technology.
