About this deal

Filmed at Nettlefold Studios this neat little crime drama tells the story of An innocent hitch-hiker who takes a ride into danger when he accepts a lift from a woman who is being blackmailed. If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. I'm thankful there's not too much comedic relief, as there often is with films of this kind, but it isn't dark or energetic either. Maurice Elvey was the most prolific director in British cinema history, making over 300 features after his debut in 1913. From the theme music I was expecting a comedy but it turned into an above average thriller I thought the 2 leads bounced off each other well and mary germaine held her own as genuine costar but the other men in the house were poorly written.

A young man asks his sister Carol (Mary Germaine) to go to a blackmailer’s (Alexander Gauge) house and pay him off and reclaim any evidence. The latter has a touch of Michael Wilding about him and subsequently went on to considerable success in the US, notably playing opposite Audrey Hepburn in Gigi on Broadway. Not so action packed as some gangster movies, some shooting and killing but not gory or blood thirsty, just good old fashion movie. The Swedish Film Institute has a duty to support production, distribution and screening of valuable film, to preserve and make accessible the Swedish film heritage and to represent Swedish film abroad. An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves. The story concerns a traveller who finds himself accused of murder after he receives a ride from a person who kills an extortionist. There, they meet Markham (Alexander Gauge) and his two associates, an elderly Eastern European doctor (Hugo Schuster) and a sharp-tongued American (John Arnatt), also a Polish maid (Ingeborg von Kusserow) and a seedy, spying butler (Denis Shaw). To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. On the way she picks up a hitchhiker Jimmy (William Sylvester) and hatches a plan to trick the blackmailer by having Jimmy play her fiancé and lawyer.

BBFC: Release Date: 05/10/2015 Run Time: 193 minutes Languages: English LPCM Mono Subtitles: None DVD Regions: Region 0 (All) Formats: Pal Aspect Ratio: Full Screen 1. A fun little country house mystery which Maurice Elvey wrings as much style out of even though he is saddled with a hugely annoying and smug leading man in William Sylvester. It's a tongue-in-cheek affair, which we thought worked well, except for a Bugsy Malone style performance from American Reed DeRouen. Mary Germaine is tough but warm and attractive, and the other two actresses are also very engaging, particularly gorgeous Patricia Owens, who sadly has only a small part as a model in this, but went on to better things in the US. This proves to be a ride he'll never forget, when the blackmailer is killed by high-tension wires and the rider is accused of the crime. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows. William Sylvester plays the hitcher-cum-sleuth well and Denis Shaw is good as they nosey butler in this short-but-sweet double-crossing pot-boiler that do.

Jimmy agrees to accompany Carol to the house and pose as her lawyer in an attempt to unnerve Markham. Of the cast, only Ingeborg Wells and Denis Shaw show any spirit, and direction is not particularly in evidence. The script is clever and witty, and we loved most of the movie, although the suspense lagged a bit towards the end.

Peter Bull is his usual impressive self as the upper crust and sneering member of a six-man crime ring, who are the victims of an unknown mole who is helping the police with their enquiries in a very entertaining way. The ‘Six Men` are a gang of six criminals that Scotland Yard is unable to pin a charge against even though they are positive of the identities. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait. An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves in this British crime drama directed by Maurice Elvey.

We enjoyed it from a film history point of view, and sat through until the end, despite a terrible print and even worse sound quality. House of Blackmail é um filme de drama britânico de 1953, dirigido por Maurice Elvey e estrelado por Mary Germaine, William Sylvester e Alexander Gauge. Mary Germaine hires William Sylvester to accompany her to a rendezvous at a blackmailer's country house even though she suspects he may be a convict on the run in this low-budget B-movie that punches above its weight in the early stages before collapsing under the weight of expectation.
