About this deal

As usual, the secondary characters are highly entertaining, and many play an important role in this volume. The stakes are high, the danger greater than ever as the villain of the piece sees their plans fast unravelling, but will the Dales Detective Agency succeed in discovering the perpetrator, and will Bruncliffe be left unscathed, or will the village be scarred forever by the fallout of this last(?

However, although the crimes initially seem minor, we soon find that something very serious is going on in the Dales and the book has some very dark scenes. It doesn’t help that both his detective agency and Delilah’s business are lettered the same, ‘DDA’ and in the same building! Wonderfully engaging, Julia Chapman’s latest Dales mystery is perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club series . The pair have become embroiled in several cases that put them smack bang in the path of danger and in a ‘will-they, won’t-they’ relationship.I say latest because much reference is made to previous mayhem, which I assume was covered in earlier novels. Usually I am confident about just jumping into an ongoing mystery series as authors will provide background for readers new to the series. However, as I kept reading I did get more into the swing of the current story and found it a compelling read. It will be interesting to see the TV series if/when that happens, but make sure you read the books first if you can.

The obvious exception is the perpetrator, who is, in melodramatic fashion, particularly evil and sociopathic. Little do the detective duo know that several of their cases are about to collide, as what appears to be a simple matter of identifying the whereabouts of the missing man becomes something far more sinister. I think that it would be quite difficult to enjoy this one without having read the previous books in the series.

The dialogue is funny, notably on the subject of the fledgling romance between Delilah and Samson, where everyone has an opinion and isn’t afraid to voice it, to much squirming and embarrassment from the recipients. So I was curious to see if my crush with this background was tied to the adrenaline rush I had with seven books read in a little more than a month. Biography: Julia Chapman is the pseudonym of Julia Stagg, who has had five novels, the Fogas Chronicles set in the French Pyrenees, published by Hodder.

There are lots of little things left unsolved from the previous volumes that are answered, and the people of Bruncliffe are not at the end of their surprises. Its distinctive landscape and way of life provide the setting for her latest set of novels, the Dales Detective series. It opens with Delilah Metcalfe of Bruncliffe’s Dales Detective Agency struggling to meet the mounting demands for the agency’s services. It’s hard to know which crackles with energy more, the various explosions and fires or their chemistry.
