About this deal

As you follow the trail of facts you find that the "weight of the largest chocolate bar ever made is the same as 6 male polar bears! After writing the first book, I thought I could never beat the fact that a squid’s brain is shaped like a donut. Hop from topic to topic in unexpected and delightful ways, and discover what connects a giraffe with the Eiffel tower, or a slice of pizza with Cleopatra. Andy Smith is an award-winning illustrator, and studied illustration at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, London.

The perfect book for any fact-lover, Factopia contains 400 different facts to discover and be wowed by, covering almost anything from nature to robots to the human body to space. I hope that kids who read this book, or any nonfiction book, want to dig deeper and ask even more questions about something they found fascinating. Factopia feels like an educational book that has been really well thought out, for those with curious, wandering mines that go from one thing to the next. This is a fabulously fun way to learn new things and encourage inquisitiveness – adults and children alike will find themselves dipping into it for years to come. Did you know Disney’s The Lion King was likely inspired by Sundiata Keita who founded the Mali Empire around 1240 after defeating his treacherous uncle? You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Ancient Rome, Samuri, the Islamic Golden Age, giant things and toilets only scratch the surface of what they’ll find inside! There is more than one trail through the wealth of facts included so divergent thinkers can choose to follow their own path … Andy Smith’s 300+ illustrations are huge fun and add to the enjoyment of this collection of facts for curious children (and the occasional adult I suspect).

Sprinkled through the book are ‘fact frenzies’, where facts are linked with hilarious and unexpected word connections. In a sense it was easy to let my imagination run wild and find fun and exciting links to different, unexpected topics.

I love trivia, I should just admit the fact to myself, that the people who are writing trivia books for children are filling it full of who knows what sorts of lies. From the attention-grabbing orange cover to the final record-breaking endings, this book is a winner … unlikely and interesting connections mean that the reader is continually surprised and never tires of the subject matter, as they might in a more conventional non-fiction text. It's sort of a coffee-table book for kids: one to just pick up and peruse a bit at a time, and see what fun things you learn. In this original take on presenting/reading non-fiction have fun exploring an amazing collection of interconnected facts.

For the kid who want to know why and how, who loves having random information at their finger tips and just loves to learn new things about their world - this is fantastic fun.

Kai found the mix of hand drawn pictures and photo realistic pictures really cool as well, and could read through the book and then tell us the highlights as he goes. These paths all intertwine really well, as you transition from learning about bugs to learning about sharks, and then into light reflecting off of the moon creating rainbows!
