About this deal

They are the epitome of 'opposites attract' and it fills my heart with joy every time they banter and argue with each other. The joy of this is the more I read, the more clear it becomes why Wendell spends so much time around Emily. Anachronisms upon anachronisms ensue, giving a whiplash feel of the time and absolute lack of the feel of the place. But as Emily gets closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones - the most elusive of all faeries - she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want?

It's an isolated island that’s about as far north as a person can go without hitting the North Pole. The dog hung his head in abject embarrassment until his tormentors deigned to relieve him of this woolen pillory, and he spent the next hour pointedly ignoring me. A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love, in this heartwarming and enchanting fantasy. Norrell, the critique of academia found in Babel, or the sheer atmosphere of Naomi Novik’s Spinning Silver or Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy. He gives off peak ‘damsel in distress vibes’ and I adored the scenes where they were together, how he managed to get under her skin like no other, but also had a protective streak.I had a hard time remembering who was who because none of them felt like fully realized people with personalities and histories. There are only a few Great Reads that enter a fantasy-fiction lover's life, and this, my friends, is one of them - easily in my top 5 reads of all time. Hrafnsvik has the feel of a mysterious place from the moment we arrive there, and the people also have their own unique culture about them, seen especially in the way they react when Emily rejects their offers of help. Like, the whole thing about Emily being chosen to marry the fae king came so suddenly and without build-up, and it was the exact same when it came to her rescue. I have recently been enjoying a lot more cozy fantasy, fantasy romance, and fae stories, so I thought this would be the perfect combination of everything I have been seeking.

Following an dauntless scholar who sets off on an adventure to uncover and chronicle the secrets of elusive faeries, this is a story that wins readers over with its heart-warmingly awkward protagonist and enchanting wintry world. There's still a long way to go when it comes to their relationship and the romance isn't exactly the main focus of the story, but I hope there's a lot more in the second book. However Emily does care about people in her own way and she makes a lot of steps to help some of the locals that have been negatively impacted by interactions with the fae.The depth of conflicts is at the level of a young novel, immature and naive, and the resolution of these is beyond lackluster. They’re one of the most elusive faeries in the world and she’s dead set on finding them and studying their traditions. She also notices some odd things in the village, indications of humans that have been bewitched by the fae. Emily’s fascination with faeries is infectious and her devotion to her work draws readers into her unique world, which feels both familiar and unfamiliar, mixing real locations with fictional landscapes.
