About this deal

It was a beautifully crafted piece of work, successfully blending together her family’s personal history with a fiercely objective analysis of her father’s professional life. From a personal point of view, I was thrilled that Joanna was able to attend Speech Day this year and it was an even greater honour to sit next to her at lunch afterwards. Not until the summer of 1978 did we become an item, which meant that my first encounter with the feared Dr Pappworth could not be delayed much longer. So began the familiar routines, the four-weekly hospital visits and periodic hospital stays when she was suffering from carcinoid crises.

They are seven years apart in age and their careers took different routes – Peacock headed up the Poetry Society of America’s subway poetry project and then moved to Toronto, while Levin taught at the University of Maryland – but over the years they developed “a sense of trust that really does feel familial … There is a weird way, in our conversations about poetry, that we share a single soul. After finishing her doctorate she took her first job as a teacher of English at the Aylesbury Grammar School. Accepting that she could no longer tutor nor teach was hard for a woman of such fierce pride and independence. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. She attributed much of her own later success in the fields of international human rights as having their origins in her conversations with Pappworth.

Seldon is a head teacher and appears on television and radio and in the press, [40] and has written regularly for national newspapers including The Times, [41] The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian. Both women became devoted to the sonnet, an unusual choice because at the time that they were graduate students free verse reigned and form was something one had to learn on one’s own time.
