About this deal

Shooting f/13 on 40+ Mpix bodies means your images are diffraction limited, independently of the lens. This was most evident in the central section of images shot in portrait orientation at speeds between 1/4 and 1/15 sec. If all I wanted to do was shoot test charts, this 70-200/4 is the way to go for you tripod and NEF guys — it's undefeated for sharpness. OK, you twisted my arm, so I just shot a 80-200mm f/4 AI-s versus this new 70-200/4 VR at the range. In one case -the hyper-focusing on one single suject- and in the other one - the attempt to take a 360o picture - we're talking here of sorts of specialization in photography that have both their raison-d'etre but are second to main considerations: the quickness, the sharpness, the stabilization, the flare issue, the reliability in the long term of one lens.

The manual focus lenses are much better made, and sell for a lot less money - but they don't autofocus. It doesn't have VR, but I mostly use it outdoors where I have little trouble getting the fast shutter speeds I want anyway. The D500, D850, and Z6ii and Z7ii have dual processors, but the D500 and D850 are better tuned to take advantage of the processor. The most interesting comparison for many Nikon shooters will be between the new lens and the venerable AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2. Chromatic aberration is absolutely present in modest amounts throughout the focal length range, though it decreases a bit as you zoom in. There’s always just a bit of degradation at the edges, indeed, even stopped down to f/8 at some focal lengths.

According to Nikon, you can leave VR on even when the camera is on a tripod, but I’d not recommend it for critical work. All in all, the f4 is a lens that splits things up nicely into planes – it has that transparency and separation I look for in my lenses; more importantly, it doesn’t really impose It doesn’t extend when focusing or zooming, it’s weather sealed, equipped with a silent wave motor, and the latest generation of Nikon’s vibration reduction system – supposedly good for up to four stops.I don't know if Luka3rd is or not, but I suspect that a lot of english as a second or third language people "all but" may not be a clear idiom. The reason why I like this teleconverter so much, is because it almost does not affect the performance of lenses, or their focusing abilities. Marike6: you're right, photography (at this level of gear) is quite expensive, but I think it could (should ?

We took to the streets for some portraits and shot a few macro photos for this first installment in our sample gallery. If you don't shoot much action with the 70-200/4, I think it can produce excellent results with a very pleasing overall rendition. There is quite a bit of loss of contrast with the TC-20E III, similarly to what you would see with other lenses, which is expected. On a D600, focusing feels all but instant (despite the insistence of Nikon reps that the sample we used was 'unfinished') and the zoom action is smooth and well-damped. This new Nikon 70-200 lens feels great and is insanely sharp, even wide-open on a D800E at 36 MP in the farthest corners.I'm also tempted to get the 70-200 f4 G VR and adapt it while I wait for the native f4, but experiences with that lens and the FTZ seem to be all over the place with some people finding it unusable and others having no problems. Canon was just nice and smart enough not to discontinue the old non IS version and keep selling it for a bargain to people who couldn't afford the new, better IS version. Unless you are dead set on using MF only, this setup offers you the best of both worlds, and even more so if you set “AF-ON only” for focus activation on camera bodies that support this feature.
