First of all, I loved the cover of this book, and I’m excited to see that the covers of the next two instalments, Cold Clay and Mirror Lake, line up with this one to create a cute scene from Shady Hollow. The first chapter ranges through the beginnings of Greek and Roman writing, the spread of Christianity in Europe, monastic manuscript copying, and the rise of modern typography. Find out in this upbeat picture book that teaches kids to speak their minds and stand up for what they believe in. This book does not read fast--it is dry in places but for the most part is interesting and even humorous.

There are a few additional sentences to provide context as the baking process continues, but it mainly labels the emotions along with the expressive character. Various marks have been integral in the development of written language, so it’s only logical that some of them were born during important eras for humanity. As you might expect, Shady Characters has images scattered across the text, all with helpful, manicule directed, captions underneath!More than a mere catalog of curious trivia, it’s an absolutely fascinating blend of history, design, sociology, and cultural poetics — highly recommended. The tone Houston took toward early Christianity was not to my taste, but it’s a secular book, so I didn’t really expect anything else, and to be fair, a lot of the “Christianity” he referenced was not all that Christian in nature. Pilcrows and octothorpes and interrobangs—it was a fun, tongue-in-cheek experience for any lover of linguistic trivia. Humanity has shown remarkable flexibility and innovation when it came to representing some non-textual intention, though sometimes it took a REALLY long time.
