About this deal

So much suffering, so much pain, so much hurt that he’d carried for centuries, and all because of those Augurs. My favourite thing about Laia is how determined she is and how she constantly persists after what she has been through. As the series progressed, Helene underwent the most growth (or change) in my opinion, though the eleventh hour romance of her life felt somewhat out of character. It opened up not only a link to the past (which I think was well explored as it always had a purpose and helped to give a message to you as a reader) but brought up emotions that Laia shared with The Nightbringer and how they both dealt with their pain.

I wish I knew more of her history with her father too as he’s surprised me over the course of the books, especially accepting Laia as one line mentioned. So on the one hand I see the flaws in this series more clearly and it doesn't all line up with my current taste, but on the other I feel nostalgic for it. And then there is this book, which contains both, but that teaches us enough lessons that it barely feels like fiction anymore. Then we have the warrior Helene, like if I was in a fight I’d need Helene on my side because she’s such a bad ass!

Until A Sky Beyond the Storm, despite several shortcomings, the plot kept me anchored to the series: It was interesting, fast-paced, eventful, full of twists, and often felt like an emotional roller coaster ride. I read the other 3 before this one was released and had to wait… then let’s add that life happens and totally forgot! But we love it when sisterly love tells you that this isn’t the way to handle emotions, even if we don’t always listen at first. The anticipation of something better happening 'maybe in the next chapter/page' until the last few chapters is now hurting my head. Like in Reaper, we follow three different first-person perspectives: Helene (Blood Shrike), Elias (Soul Catcher), and Laia (Laia).

She got hurt so much, and her mother was taken from her, and Keris was forced to listen to her own being tortured to death. I’d have loved more commandant page time– she must have some conflicting thoughts herself especially around Elias.
