About this deal

Vickery] opens resolutely shut doors and peeps into the private lives of servants, aristocrats and the “polite and middling sorts” – merchants, clergy members, doctors and lawyers…Ms. In fact, the feigned harmony of their marriage, and the saccharine sweet love story that preceded it, are simply covering up a horrible truth. He’s a dedicated attorney who has never lost a case; she is a flawless homemaker, a masterful gardener and cook, and dotes on her disabled younger sister. This perfect-on-paper party is being hosted by the couple who will become central to this novel, Jack and Grace. Although dealing with some dark and mature material, Miriam Halahmy uses a delicate touch and explores these themes sensitively.

The cleverly constructed plot, well-drawn characters, relatable themes, and easy-to-read and intelligent prose make for an enjoyable and compelling read. Behind Closed Doors by Catherine Alliott was published in hardback, audio, and eBook formats on 4 March 2021. Although this truly was one of the most chilling thrillers I have read in a while, the twists and the plot weren’t altogether too shocking for me.

Behind Closed Doors is both unsettling and addictive, as I raced through the pages to find out Grace’s fate.

This history of house interiors in Georgian England is a sparkling and erudite work from one of our best historians. What we’re left with is a pair of unbelievable characters in an unbelievable situation that’s executed competently. Grace was a likeable character for the most part, but honestly at times she was so frustrating that I really wanted to throttle her.

Soon their family will grow when Millie, Grace’s little sister who has Down’s syndrome will come to live with them. A facade adopted by a flawed man in an attempt to hide what he really is, a monster with monstrous intentions.
