About this deal

She won the Pritzker Prize, the most prestigious award for architecture, and she was the youngest person ever to win. Prepared in collaboration with the architect's office, this comprehensive survey of over 200 projects - from the earliest experimentations to product design, from speculative follies to large-scale built works - is a testament to the depth, range and excitement of her vision. With her most recent commission, Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center, architect Zaha Hadid becomes the first woman ever to design an American museum. With an audacious and abstracted geometry of forms and lines, the BMW Central Building challenges the notion of building as static and is definitive evidence of architecture as art.

Meet Ella Fitzgerald, First Lady of Song who once said, "It's not where you come from, but where you're going that counts. Today, Hadid is firmly established among the elite of world architecture, her audacious and futuristic designs as well as her sense for style and fashion having catapulted her to international fame.Zaha Hadid/BMW Central Building", the seventh volume in the "Source Books in Architecture" series, provides a comprehensive look at this instant modern masterpiece.

Remarkables REMARKABLES Intriguing, stunning, or otherwise remarkable books These include fine editions, foreign publications that are exceptional for their interest or production, special editions and some first-rate books from very small publishers. The majority of Hadid’s assets will go to her charity, the Zaha Hadid Foundation, which will establish a museum and award Arab women architectural education scholarships. This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the architect’s life.

Also, the illustrations were wonderful really bringing to life the feeling of shape and movement that Zaha saw and placed in her designs. Aaron Betsky is dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and a former director of the Cincinnati Art Museum.Paper dolls, learning cards, matching games and other fun learning tools provide even more ways to make the lives of these role models accessible to children. Readers will recognize her built work-the Vitra Fire Station near Basel and the IBA Building in Berlin- and will welcome details of her competition entry for Chicago's ITT Building, and her winning design for the Cardiff Opera House. Critic and museum director Aaron Betsky’s introduction examines Hadid’s entire career, both in the context of architectural history and as a manifestation of the current and future state of architecture. Why do we argue so bitterly about sofas and pictures - and can differences of taste ever be satisfactorily resolved?

That said, I look forward to seeing more from the team who put this together because creating a story about an architect that works pretty well is no easy feat! She saw beauty and art in nature and in building and couldn't pass a construction site without stopping to sketch it. See our Remarkables Archive for some that are no longer in print, but which we are happy to try to track down. This book does her a great honor, first in that she's being introduced to young people who get to grow up knowing she existed and her amazing buildings remain, and second in that the book is charming, warm, and encouraging.I could see many students, as I did, looking up these buildings online to see what they look like now and then looking up any additional information they could find.
