About this deal

It's shorter, the romance slightly less abstract and disembodied than usual but I really enjoyed it. Orange publisher's cloth hardcover is clean save for some residue on the back and features red embossed titles on the front and spine. At the same time, her fears about actually placing her life and future into Nick's hands and taking that irreversible plunge into a strange new world are realistic and understandable.

When Dona Dominica sets sail on the Santa Maria, she wonders if she will ever meet the infamous El Beauvallet, the English pirate with a reputation of being able to do anything because of witchcraft. I don't think this will be one that I reread often like Frederica or The Unknown Ajax, but I still enjoyed it very much. While this isn't as amusing as most of her work, and the romance wasn't exactly to die for, I did enjoy it well enough. Seizing the chance, she tried to kill the hateful pirate -- but as he took her arm and held it she found herself strangely captured by his boyish smile. A ready supply of reference books enabled Georgette to continue writing the historical fiction that she loved. To secure the fake papers he'll need to travel into Spain Nick seeks the aid of a distant French cousin, an old friend who accompanied Nick on his European ramblings in younger years. From the details of the clothing, to the etiquette and social graces, types of equipage, dances, food, liqueur, sentiments, current affairs and manner of speech - Heyer has it all nailed down, and with effortless ease.

I think the era and the setting put me off but boy am I glad now I didn't pass it up in the Heyer group read. With his decision to stop at nothing to make Dominica his bride, he may have just taken on his most challenging adventure yet. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Reprint, cheap edition, a very good book, contemporary inscription dated 1939 on free front end paper. Author of over fifty books, Georgette Heyer is the best-known and best-loved of all historical novelists, making the Regency period her own.Having won a sea battle with a Spanish galleon, Sir Nicholas Beauvallet finds that Don Manuel de Rada y Sylva, the late governor of Santiago, is aboard with his daughter Dona Dominica.

As for me, if I'm reading a historical novel, I want it to be historical in more than merely clothing. I found that it had a really slow start - about 30 percent to set up the situation before any adventuring happened. An entertaining tale from start to finish, with Nick's enterprising servant Joshua Dimmock providing invaluable support and Joshua's running commentary on his and Mad Nick's antics providing comic relief. Circumstances see him and his valet, the finicky, chatty Joshua, enter Spain from France with a Frenchman's papers, and the disguise is a tenuous one. Nick and Dominica have some nail-biting adventures, alone and together, before their final nick-of-time escape.
