About this deal

For example, the guitar solo on Heart Shaped Box has an added flange-effect that wasn’t on the original, while the distortion and background effects on All Apologies are really cranked up and put to the front of the mix. For example, I altered my long-time copy of Bleach to more accurately depict how the album was presented during it’s initial release by removing the last two tracks (“Big Cheese” and “Downer”) from my digital copy of the recording.

I suspect that some fans might actually even like something like that while a good portion of listeners would probably be indifferent. Some critics - and the band themselves - were disappointed in the sound of Pennyroyal Tea and felt that it was the one that could have done with Nevermind producer Butch Vig's magic touch. But the real jewel on this disc is "Forgotten Tune," a recently unearthed instrumental recorded by Nirvana during an In Utero-era rehearsal. Nirvana was my favorite band growing up and I would have initially had a copy of this album in the mid 90’s when they were at the peak of their contemporary fame. It’s one of the better Nirvana live sets to be commercially released, definitely better than the Paramount concert that came with the Nevermind box set, but I still like the Reading Festival one more (although that’s generally considered to be one of the best live shows of all time, so that may not be a fair comparison). In Utero as Dave Grohl has mentioned previous said, was a difficult listen as this is Kurt at his raw best, opening up about his issues but at the same time writing some absolutely incredible music.

I don’t understand some of the negative feedback Chalkys get - I have never had any problem and would absolutely recommend them. I don’t think that these jewel cases are made as sturdy as they used to be and that too is probably part of the problem here. Each song on In Utero is represented with a live performance from Los Angeles, Springfield, Rome, New York and Seattle plus two cover songs widely played throughout the tour: The Vaselines’ “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam” and David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World.Whilst for awhile it was Nevermind that never left my CD player in the 90's, it was In Utero that I truly fell in love with. The DVD also has a few bonus cuts, including rehearsal footage and some clips from other TV appearances. In Utero is a howling, defiantly punkish recording, an unsentimental throwback to an era of garage band epiphanies and raw, unadorned rock and roll.
