About this deal

In 2021, Mattel released its most recent astronaut doll with the Barbie Space Discovery line. This version of astronaut Barbie wears a white spacesuit with pink and blue detailing, white gloves, and white boots. The best part about this doll is that it's actually been to space! This is the version of Barbie that was chosen for Mattel’s Mission DreamStar expedition to the International Space Station in 2022. But the new astronaut Barbie isn’t the only one going on space adventures this year. Mattel has collaborated with National Geographic to create a line of STEM career Barbies, including an astrophysicist. This line of Barbie dolls was specifically focused on science occupations in which women are underrepresented. Programs Learning resources Plan a field trip Educator professional development Education monthly theme The first Barbie astronaut outfit, "Barbie Miss Astronaut," was released in 1965, two years after Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the world's first woman to fly into space and 18 years before an American woman, Sally Ride, would follow her. Helping people understand the world is, and always has been, the core purpose of National Geographic," Goldberg said in press release. "Through our partnership with Barbie, we are excited to reach kids in a new way, using the power of play to inspire our next generation of explorers, scientists and photographers."

Thank you Barbie for inviting me to be a part of the role models campaign!" said Echazarreta in a social media post on Tuesday. "I used to play with my dolls and pretend they were traveling the galaxy!" The advisory team helped Mattel create accessories that are relevant for each Barbie’s career. Astrophysicist Barbie, for example, comes with a telescope, a star chart, and a fun nebula-printed shirt (like you'd likely find in the closet of a a real-life astrophysicist). Bonus: Barbie has also had a long career in aviation! Over the years she has served as a flight attendant, commercial pilot, military pilot, and more. The Museum has five aviation-themed Barbies (and one Ken) in its collection, though they are not on display at this time.

Kids can build a universe and collect other Barbie® Space Discovery™ toys to fuel even more storytelling and role-play fun! Born in Mexico, Echazarreta moved to the U.S. with her family when she was eight years old. She earned her bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while interning at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena. Later, she accepted a position as engineer and worked on five missions, including the Perseverance rover now on Mars and Europa Clipper, which is set to be launched to Jupiter's moon in 2024. In honor of these two new and very special additions to our collection, we are documenting Barbie’s long career as one of our nation’s foremost space explorers. 1960s Academic and nonacademic outreach projects are eligible to apply for the new scholarship, so long as they will be conducted in Europe and can be completed within 12 months. Echazarreta's Barbie doll portrays her wearing her Space for Humanity flight suit, complete with a miniature version of the mission patch designed for her flight.

In addition to being the first Mexican-born woman to cross the boundary between Earth and space, Echazarreta was also the first "citizen astronaut" to fly in a seat sponsored by the non-profit Space for Humanity. Barbie® Space Discovery™ dolls and toys inspire kids to let their imaginations blast off into space! A former NASA engineer who became the first Mexican-born woman to fly into space now has a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll attesting to her being a role model for the next generation of scientists and explorers.

There is perhaps no résumé in existence quite as long as Barbie’s. Known for her endless list of careers, Barbie has decades of experience in business, medicine, modeling, and just about any other industry you can imagine. After all, the intention behind Barbie was that she would allow girls to imagine themselves as young adults. And if you are imagining possible careers, why not think big? Visitors to the museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, can see four iterations of Astronaut Barbie: 1965 Miss Astronaut, 1985 Astronaut Barbie, 1994 Moon landing Barbie, and the two Barbies that went to space in 2022. They join a vast collection of aviation and space themed toys that explore how society and culture has been impacted by flight and space exploration.
