Compared to the often pilot-built FPV drones you see racing, the AVATA is a very finely designed DJI machine. It’s small and extremely well made, with a tough plastic frame that protects the electronics and battery. The props unlike other DJI drones are protected by a guard that sits under the drone’s main body. On the table, it looks more like a micro hovercraft than a drone. But, if you do want to graduate from the Motion Controller to something more serious, you can do that with the Avata too. It’ll pair right up with a regular DJI FPV controller 2 and give you access to full manual mode so you can do all those complicated maneuvers. And yet, it’ll still have some of the useful features to keep you safe like the ability to bail out of a flip by hitting the pause button, or have your home point displayed in your goggle’s HUD. The small camera is mounted on the front of the drone and has the ability to tilt up and down. You can do this with the motion controller by simply tilting the controller up or down when the drone hovers. When you start to fly, tilting up and down makes the drone go up and down. Conservative estimates put a set with the drone, goggles and controller to be about RM3,000 which is about the same price as a DJI Mini 3 Pro. Only that comes fully assembled and with a whole bunch of modern safety features to keep it from ending up in a tree.
The overwhelming majority of drone pilots fly safely and responsibly. But DJI Avata’s high-speed performance can warrant extra attention and care from drone pilots to be aware of their surroundings. Drone pilots flying with FPV goggles should pair with a visual observer to act as a spotter. Remember that many jurisdictions require a visual observer to watch for airspace hazards. So, always fly safely and responsibly, and be sure to understand and follow the legal requirements set by the civil aviation authorities in your region. Firstly the stills photo mode is a single shot, and that’s it with a maximum resolution of 4000 x 3000, so a 4:3 aspect ratio, although you can change this in the settings. First of all, the AVATA battery is popped in and plugged in. Next, the Goggles V2 is plugged into an external power source, and my iPhone contains the DJI Fly App which is again plugged into the Goggles V2.
Once the batteries had recharged, which took slightly more than nine hours for the three batteries, about 3 hours each, it was time to test the use of the goggles. Again with the spotter at the ready, I used the Motion Controller to navigate through a gate and through the garden; the live view feed and the over-enthusiastic spotter guided me through the environment without issue. This is like playing a VR computer game rather than being outside in the real world.The battery fits in the open frame and slots in behind the camera, giving the drone instant balance. Once in place, the battery is firmly held in place into the frame by two compression clips. Once in, there is no way the battery will come out without human assistance. The battery’s connector can then be plugged in with a firm push.
Everything about the drone is tight and compact. When it comes to the small camera it is squeezed in at the front with the ability to tilt up and down. The camera’s position is fixed; there’s no mechanical image stabilisation. Tested in an outdoor open environment without interference. The video transmission latency varies with different goggles. DJI FPV Goggles V2 can achieve video transmission of up to 810p. When you use DJI FPV Goggles V2 with the 810p/120fps video transmission, the lowest video transmission latency is less than 28 ms.In fact, before you even get into the air, you also need to know how to assemble your FPV drone. And let me tell you they do not snap in place like legos. Then, there’s the cost of getting into it. DJI Avata only supports downward obstacle sensing when used with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, or DJI RC Motion 2/DJI Motion Controller in N Mode and S Mode. It’s definitely my favourite product to come out of DJI in a long, long time. Nothing I’ve tried even comes close to the thrill it offers and I’m not even using it to its fullest potential. DJI Avata is compatible with DJI Goggles 2, the DJI FPV Goggles V2, and the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2. But what exactly is it that makes Avata the safest and arguably the most powerful CineWhoop-style FPV drone to fly today, straight out of the box? Let’s find out… 1. Avata is much smaller than DJI FPV Combo What’s more, since it was a smart battery, the remaining charge is displayed in percentages, while typical FPV drones require the pilot to monitor the voltage so they don’t over drain the battery. Obviously, this fancy new tech comes with its own set of limitations. For starters, that battery is about as proprietary as it gets. Yes, you get the convenience of charging it with USB-C, but you’re probably only going to be able to buy new ones from DJI themselves.
