About this deal

I was starting to feel as if I was out of my depth, as though I was about to be rumbled for not being as good as everybody thought I was; a big fish in the smaller pond of Indy, but a minnow in the piranha tank of Formula One. Reed, Adam (10 October 2018). "All-female motor racing series aims to break through Formula One's 'glass-ceiling' ". CNBC . Retrieved 27 October 2018. At the end of 1986 Newey joined the Haas Lola F1 team in an effort to improve its fortunes, but the team withdrew at the conclusion of the 1986 season. After a spell at Newman-Haas in 1987 working as Mario Andretti's race engineer, Newey was re-hired by March, this time to work in Formula One as chief designer. This book was a more satisfying learning experience when it came to understanding how the teams work. I didn't know quite how much responsibility a driver's race engineer has before reading this book. The way the structure and size of Formula One teams has evolved over time was also fascinating and new-to-me. The personal stories from Newey about being a team member at a race or getting to drive a Formula One car also gave some interesting insights into the sport. Adrian Newey’s written a book – and it’s quite superb. Granted, you may need a certain all-encompassing fascination of every aspect of F1 including the nuts and bolts to be riveted by it all (which I was), but How To Build A Caris so much more than just what its title implies. It’s also the story, told with eye-opening candour, of his life and loves. Horner sings Newey's praises". PlanetF1.com. 19 January 2011. Archived from the original on 21 January 2011 . And if they failed to keep hold of him, imagine how different F1 history might have been had Ferrari ever succeeded in signing Newey? They tried more than once. Adrian Newey has created more winners than all the super-brain computers in Formula One put together. The Times The book goes well beyond Barnard’s design board. The political implications of his moves are among its most fascinating passages, including his divorce from Ferrari which was relatively swiftly followed by his return.I've spent this weekend thoroughly engrossed in this account of the infamous Adrian Newey's life with cars. It spans from his earliest childhood memories to his current Formula One career with Redbull Racing / Redbull Advanced Technologies; charting both personal and professional insights with his likeable, firm but fair style. Batra, Ruhi. "Newey giving shape to Red Bull dreams". The Times of India. Archived from the original on 21 May 2013 . Retrieved 4 December 2012. This necessarily sombre note falls midway through the tale of a boy who left school with some pretty damning judgments ringing in his ears – “disinterested, slapdash and rather depressing”, “behaviour extremely silly” – but eventually thought, rather than fought, his way to the very top of his sport. British GT Championship Silverstone 500 Provisional Entry List" (PDF). British GT. 3 June 2019 . Retrieved 4 June 2019. Red Bull Racing Adrian Newey:: Red Bull". www.redbull.com. This book pulls off the remarkable feat of being a first-class autobiography and textbook all in one. For those studying the evolution of the F1 car between the late ‘80s and now, it decodes all the mysteries previously hidden by competitive secrecy while revealing the man behind most of the greatest cars of that time period. Simmons, Marcus (13 January 2016). "Harrison Newey gets Van Amersfoort Racing Formula 3 seat". autosport.com . Retrieved 6 April 2016. Adrian Newey is such a highly regarded figure in his field, he probably doesn't need to worry at all about writing for wider audiences. He can write exactly what he wants to, and people will still eat it up. And rightfully so. F1 in the 1990s tended to be a battle for supremacy between McLaren and Williams. In 1996, McLaren chief Ron Dennis shrewdly poached Williams’ designer, Newey, who after a gardening leave was finally unleashed, along with Neil Oatley to produce the 1998 champion car McLaren MP4-13. With Newey’s usual focus on aerodynamic efficiency and a very clean aero look all round, the result was an ultra-compact race car. Newey is regarded by many to be one of the greatest engineers in Formula One history; his designs have won numerous titles and more than 200 Grands Prix. Newey is also one of the most successful designers, winning twelve Constructors' Championships with three different Formula One teams, and with seven different drivers winning thirteen Drivers' Championships driving Newey's designs. How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian's unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he's been involved. Right then I knew I had a different way of looking at the world. Thinking about it now, I’m aware that I’m also possessed of an enormous drive to succeed, and maybe that comes from wanting to prove I’m not always wrong

His career at Williams ended with his cars winning 59 race victories, 78 pole positions and 60 fastest laps all from 114 races from 1991 till 1997. These seven years saw four drivers clinch world championship titles. Newey loses his mojo during his winless tenure at LeytonHouse, two divorces, an Ayrton Senna’s death in 1994. The tragedy arose from an aerodynamically unstable Williams’ car in which Ayrton attempted to do things the car was not capable of doing.

Ferrari needs 'a lot more work' ". Sky Sports. BSkyB. 8 February 2012. Archived from the original on 10 February 2012 . Retrieved 9 February 2012. A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian's thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form - he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies; most notably Ayrton Senna's death during his time at Williams in 1994. This is the autobiography of Adrian Newey, apparently the best Formula 1 racecar designer ever. He chronicles his life, starting with early years, studies and then his many years in the racing industry.
