About this deal

I want to make a point about upgrade sprues because I highlighted them in the other article as being a money sink. And, sometimes they are here, and sometimes not. The Dark Angels, who I ragged on pretty hard for having very, very little in their Combat Patrol other than some Intercessors, a Primaris Chaplain, a Redemptor Dreadnought, and 3 Inceptors–a grand total of 10 models in this army box–turned out pretty good. Above average at 485. Now, my first impression with this box is that it doesn’t provide you with a variety of units at all. In fact, it basically leaves you with one strategy really – spam, spam and spam again. The Rubric Marines, being Space Marines, will have good shooting, especially if you get a couple of Soulreaper cannon upgrades in there. The Chaos Spawn provide the melee, but really that’s it. I’m not a Thousand Sons player, but if I were to start, this would not be the Boarding Patrol for me. It also includes 4x Tzaangor Upgrade Frames and 1 x Chaos Space Marine Transfer Sheet. All models are supplied with their appropriate bases. There’s a certain train of thought that it’s easier to paint models like Thousand Sons and Chaos Space Marines with lots of trim if you prime them the color of the trim, then fill in the armor colors later. This idea has particular weight if you’re going to be painting the armor a flat color, and aren’t liable to hit the trim and require a lot of clean-up.

Paintwise, the Thousand Sons have some of the most detailed power armor in the game, with lots of thin trim, striped patterns, and magical flame effects. These details can make painting the faction a daunting process for newer players, and can make painting Thousand Sons models a time-consuming process. On the flip side, let’s look at the bottom of the list: the Adeptus Mechanicus Combat Patrol. It’s pretty pitiful.Just like the Grey Knights box, this one has a pretty small “base” value, however, when you add in the upgrade sprues on the Tzaangors the value falls in line with the other Combat Patrol box sets. GW has used two methods to attempt to balance the boxes against one another. First, although the models in the box set may have many weapon options, there’s a particular loadout you’re supposed to equip your models with. Perhaps the biggest surprise here is that the Grey Knights, whose box was the very worst value in the entire batch, comes in third in most points-per-dollar. What this means, essentially, is that Grey Knights are undercosted, if you can say such a thing about a Games Workshop product. If you’re getting 545 points in a box and it’s the worst value box, then that means that the Grey Knight models are very valuable. Conclusion

This was the chart of the best value, dollar-for-dollar. For more detail on this, read the other article. Best Value Dollar-For-Dollar Brave, honest and true, they only very occasionally indulge in macabre vampiric rituals with goblets of suspiciously viscous red ‘wine’– and it really is only once in a blue moon that one of them slips into an insane, suicidal killing frenzy fuelled by the overwhelming psychic grief imprinted in his DNA. The daemon-hunting lords of Titan are on the march with the Grey Knights Combat Patrol. They arrive with a Librarian in Terminator Armour, five Grey Knights Terminators, five rank-and-file Grey Knights (which can be built as a Strike Squad, Interceptor Squad, Purifier Squad, or Purgation Squad), and a mighty Nemesis Dreadknight. There was a time in the not-too-distant past when Games Workshop promoted a game called Combat Patrol, which was just the same as Warhammer 40k except that each side got 500 points. And, in all of my calculations, I came to the conclusion that these Combat Patrol boxes are supposed to be somewhere around 500 points per box. Some are more and some are less, but is the difference really that big? Honestly, I think it is. The easiest part of this. Prime the model whatever gold you’re looking to use. In this case I used GW’s Retributor Armour. Clean up any spots that need a bit of extra gold. For those of you starting the game because you like Games Workshop's models but don't want to get involved in Warhammer 40,000 as a game, I have created the following list. The points values between the two games varies massively, and as such the Combat Patrol boxes are not 500pts when used in Grimdark Future! Of the 25 miniatures in the Orks Combat Patrol, 24 were brand new on the set’s release, including 20 new Ork Boyz, three Deffkoptas, and a Warboss in mega-armour. The Deff Dread isn’t a new sculpt, but is as shooty and stompy as ever.

I posted earlier about the best value Combat Patrol box, and the worst value Combat Patrol box for Warhammer 40k. You can read all about that here. In that article I broke down each box by unit, looking at the price of how much you’d have to spend if you bought each model/unit separately. If you prefer hunting Daemons rather than making pacts with them, the Grey Knights Combat Patrol features a Librarian in Terminator Armour , five Grey Knights in Terminator Armour , five Grey Knights (which you can build as a Strike Squad, an Interceptor Squad, a Purifier Squad, or a Purgation Squad), and a mighty Nemesis Dreadknight . The Terminators provide a sturdy core to your army, while the Dreadknight strolls across the battlefield slicing things up with a Nemesis greatsword or smashing them with a Nemesis daemon hammer. Castellan Crowe Global prices have been estimated from similar-priced products. Boarding Patrol: Thousand Sons – Price, Value & Savings Summary Miniatures: 10 Battle Sisters, 4 Sisters Repentia, 1 Repentia Superior, 1 Canoness, 1 Penitent Engine, 5 Seraphim, 3 Arco-flagellants, 1 Rhino Most times the starter-style kits are a pretty good value, so even if you have some Thousand Sons already, this could be a decent value. GW just also confirmed that this will finally hit shelves in March.

Company Details

They operate as an ‘elite’ army in Warhammer 40k, meaning they tend to field fewer miniatures than their opponents for the same budget of points, but each model can hope to deal out more punishment to the enemy before it gets blown away. Ah, the Blood Angels– noble and civilised sons of Sanguinius, most handsome, tragic, star-crossed and pretty of all the Emperor’s ‘Primarch’ sons. These renaissance Italy-themed space marines are among the most storied and popular chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. That’s why we’ve assembled this overview of the Start Collecting!/Combat Patrol boxes to help you figure out if it’s worth buying the box available for your faction. The entry for each box in this article covers what miniatures are in the box, what the box costs, how much you save by buying the box rather than buying the units/characters in the box separately, and whether any models are exclusive to the box. If you just want to paint the army, play it casually and have a bit of everything, the models are still very impressive and it’s a good price for such a big variety of units, representing many different tactical aspects of how the army works.

Each Combat Patrol is supposed to be balanced against all the others. That might be hard to believe when looking at the contents of the Adeptus Custodes box set, as the boys in gold are notoriously hard! So, the Space Marine Combat Patrol comes out on top once again (it was the best value as well). If you’re looking at starting an army in Warhammer 40,000, then the Space Marine Combat Patrol box is going to get you the biggest army for your dollar. We’ve got loads of great articles coming your way, including new reveals tomorrow, a new Exemplary Battle for The Horus Heresy, and much, much more. Sign up for our newsletter to ensure you don’t miss any of the latest updates. If you’re looking to do more involved work with the armor panels, like giving them a gradient, then you’ll want to paint the armor first and do the trim later. In that case, prime the model whatever color works best for your basecoat. Expand the dominion of Magnus the Red with Combat Patrol: Thousand Sons! This boxed set provides you with all the units you need to get started or build on an existing force. The contents of this set have been specifically chosen to provide you with an ideal Thousand Sons force for Combat Patrol-sized games – approximately 25 Power Level's worth of models – and will also save you money compared to buying the contents individually.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: There are ways you can get more points out of these boxes, but if you're wanting to build the units following the instructions in the box and have them represent their intended Grimdark Future counterparts, this post is a guide to roughly how many points you'll get out of each one. For example, you could give every unit 'Veteran' status in a lot of armies and get some more points out of it, but the likelihood is you'll want to add some more units instead. As such, I've kept it as a practical army if I were to build a force using the models from the box. Hot on the heels of Krieg comes a new Astra Militarum novel, based on the exploits of the Catachan Jungle Fighters . As the Catachans prepare to go on the offensive against Orks , they find themselves saddled with a barely trained trooper from another regiment. Can he prove that he’s not a coward and earn the respect of Colonel Haskell ‘Hell Fist’ Aldalon? The Thousand Sons’ Infernal Master is also available separately for the first time. In game, he’s a powerful psyker who can make pacts with Daemons to bolster your forces, and he comes with a few floaty little friends called tutelaries. You can find full rules for fielding an Infernal Master in your games of Warhammer 40,000 in Codex: Thousand Sons .
