About this deal

Used to ensure user session remains with the same AWS instance to improve performance and stability. Moving on to Dolby Vision-supported content and Cinema mode is replaced with Dolby Vision Dark and Dolby Vision Bright. Dolby Vision Bright is designed to be used in rooms with a lot of ambient light, while Dark is best suited to rooms that are more, well, dark. The UL20’s sound is powered by 2 x 10W down-firing speakers and the results are good. While audio isn’t expansive, it avoids the bunched up feel of the A7500F with good vocal clarity with both male and female voices, some decent panning of effects and all-round good sense of intelligibility. But, if you can afford to splash out on a soundbar then you’ll be treated to a major boost in performance.

Featuring down-firing speakers with Dolby Audio and Dolby Atmos support, the Toshiba UL21 (50UL2163DBC) does deliver on sound quality. When I was using the TV I rarely needed to put the volume above about 20% so it easily filled up the room. This review relates to the 43-inch variant in the UL20 line-up, a size that makes it perfect for a second room or a bedroom. Could Toshiba be onto another budget winner? Design – Virtually the same as the U29 My preferred setting was Cinema mode, which has a warm quality to it with deeper reds and more orange-toned yellows. I also found Cinema mode toned down the pinks and blues more prominent in the default Natural mode, offering a more coherent set of colours when streaming movies and TV shows. Colour accuracy is not as impressive when viewing HDR either, particularly when colours become more saturated. Blues are reproduced rather well but intense greens, reds and cyan have a tendency to look unnatural. Whites also suffer from clipping in bright scenes. While viewing a popular test image of mountains and moving clouds, the clouds looked undefined and it was a similar story in darker scenes, with the UL21 unable to articulate fine details with clarity.

With TVs that cover 43 to 65-inches for most models announce, there’s plenty of choice in terms of what size to go for to suit your room. For smaller rooms or those in need of a cheap smart TV, there’s the HD Ready WK3C series that comes in 24- and 32-inch sizes. There are more premium features this year with Atmos sound and eARC connectivity on selected sets. Alexa integration is a headline feature, but there’s assistance from Google on some models too. The Red Bull app features content of the most extreme sports action on the globe, is free to view and features exclusive content such as the Mercedes-Benz UCI MTB World Cup, Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, along with films, shows and documentaries. The app also supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Atmos. Toshiba TV 2021 Toshiba 4K TV UK31 means a clearer picture. More pixels on the screen, creating crisper images with more details than standard HD.

Along with Dolby Vision, the UL21 is a TV that benefits from the help of Dolby Atmos, an audio feature designed to offer a more immersive and three-dimensional listening experience. Again the Toshiba 43UL2063DB is less style conscious and more practically minded where build quality is concerned. The chassis is made out of plastic but the quality is decent. It’s not much to look at, but at 43-inches aesthetics aren’t the main concern. If you intend to put the UL20 on the wall, you can do so with a VESA wall-mount (available separately). Settings is where you can go to adjust the picture, sound and network and access key information regarding installation, the system and manuals. Toshiba wasted no time replacing its budget-priced U29 set that went on sale earlier in 2020. The UL20 arrives less than six months after the U29, a TV that we praised for its solid performance and feature set.

Smarter than ever before

You get screen-mirroring via Miracast but Toshiba continues to reserve Chromecast for its Android TVs, which aren’t widely available in the UK. The UL20 works with Alexa or Google Assistant voice support through an external Echo or Nest Audio smart speaker. There is also the addition of Bluetooth, which was omitted from the U29. If ‘Device connected’ message is displayed, then the pairing was successful. If the connection fails, retry. Dynamic mode is much closer to Natural in colour, but with even more pumped-up blues, cooler-toned pinks and sharper details, which I think would work best for when you want to give daytime TV a slight boost. Though, I personally prefer the way in which the slight warmth of Natural brings more life to characters. The set’s motion handling is not the strongest though. The Low setting feels best as nudging it higher makes the ‘soap opera’ effect more obvious adding blur, fuzzy definition and jerkiness to movement. If you’re happy with a slight bit of stutter then keep it off entirely. Given that these are some of the most popular services out there offering great shows like The Mandolarian and Ted Lasso, it’s not just disappointing but surprising that you can’t access them natively through this TV.
