We tested a dozen top-rated models to uncover the best spatulas on the market. Some of the important factors we considered were ease of use (e.g. comfort and maneuverability) and durability (e.g. heat resistance and sturdiness). We also evaluated them based on their uses and types, testing how well they perform their intended tasks. One winner was Cuisinart's Flex and Flip Silicone Spatula, which we love for everyday use because of its impressive versatility.

The Winco Fish Spatula is one fish turner that stands above the rest. With a brushed stainless-steel slotted blade and wooden handle, it has a knife-edge for the ability to also cut food while grilling. We found this to be very lightweight, comfortable, and versatile, even using the 6.5-inch blade for flipping fried eggs. During testing, we were able to flip salmon fillets and eggs in a cast iron skillet without tearing the skin away from the fish or breaking the egg yolk. The size was perfect for using a standard-sized skillet, and while some food got caught on the blade, a simple wash with a scrubbing brush get everything cleaned off.

The previous version of this spatula set was very good, but OXO has recently updated it to create an even more impressive set. The newest version, featured here, is completely covered in silicone, making the spatulas more resistant to heat, easier to clean, and sturdier overall. The handles are a great length, with reinforcement the entire length of the handle and a hole at the base for hanging. Our tester was especially pleased with the length of the handles and how well they resisted heat when left sitting on the side of a skillet. She also loved how easy the spatulas were to hold, even when covered with bacon grease. The blade, or the flat metal head of the spatula, can come in a variety of sizes and shapes. A blade too short in comparison to the handle, and the spatula may prove too stiff to properly flip and serve food. However, a blade that’s too long may be difficult to handle, whether that be while cooking or washing up. This will depend again on what you’re cooking, but also on what feels comfortable to your grip. A spatula is for more than flipping burgers. Vital for essential cooking tasks like turning, mixing, scraping, and more, a spatula's versatility makes it one of the most reached-for utensils in the kitchen. Because of that, it's worth doing your research to find a good one.

According to our tester, the handle on this tool is slightly shorter than it should be for comfortably sautéing in a medium or large pan. However, it works well in a small pan, and it's sturdy and stands up to high heat. The size of the blade and its angled rectangular shape—as well as the slight flexibility of the blade—make it a good choice for scooping or mixing liquid ingredients in jars. "It's a good all-purpose spatula to have around for general tasks or for a beginning cook—or even for kids in the kitchen who cook or make crafts," our tester said.Maybe the most multipurpose of all types of spatulas, silicone spatulas are generally associated with baking, but their uses don't stop there. OXO Good Grips Wooden Turner Spatula: Our original list included this wooden spatula option, but after testing, we can no longer stand behind the recommendation. Wooden spatulas are nice to look at and won't scratch your cookware, they don't offer many other benefits over silicone or metal options. The wood will become rough with wear and can stain, and will need extra seasoning with oil in addition to the regular handwashing. The handles can burn if left too close to a flame, and the spatula itself is best used for serving since it's too inflexible to be useful for cooking. With this model, our home tester found it very uncomfortable to hold, too big to fit into smaller pans, and after only a few uses, it already needed to be rubbed with mineral oil to soften the wood. Ease of Use: How well does it do its intended job? Does it feel flimsy or hold up? Is it comfortable to hold/use? Does it scratch pans/bowls? Large and jumbo-sized spatulas are here to do some heavy lifting. Least likely to be used in everyday cooking, this spatula makes folding together a large batch of chocolate mousse or similar whipped recipe easier with fewer deflating folds in the long run. Also useful for stirring large batches of soups and liquid that need to be scraped to the bottom of the pot, a large spatula moves several handfuls of ingredients more efficiently than a large wooden spoon or ladle with the benefit of the silicone scraping head. Fish spatulas are angled to ensure lifting and serving food requires little effort. This is particularly important for lighter, more delicate foods. Struggling to dislodge fish from a pan is no good. With an angled spatula, the design does a lot of the work for you. A spatula that’s too angled (closer to 90 degrees) may slip under the food easily but isn’t helpful when it comes to lifting it from the surface comfortably. Choose a spatula that offers a happy, easy-to-handle medium. How you use the spatula is going to determine which kind you buy. Spatulas for use in baking or for making scrambled eggs, for example, are different than those you'd use to turn fish, flip a burger, or even slide a cookie off a baking sheet. Fish spatulas have a longer surface area that fans out and are usually made of thin metal, which makes it easier to retrieve fish from the pan and without it flaking. Rubber is a soft material that can usually moderate heat pretty well. In addition, it is also relatively cheap but without many of the risks of plastic.

During testing, the spatula's heavy-duty nature made it easy to flip burgers in a cast-iron skillet, with the handle being long enough to keep our hands away from the grease. It also worked well to scrape up the last bits of food in the skillet after cooking. The ergonomic handle was easy and comfortable to hold, even when lifting a meatloaf to place on a platter. One downside was that the slots are on the smaller side, which proved hard to fully clean. It also wasn't our first choice for more delicate foods—we much preferred the two Winco spatulas for that. The word has Greek and Latin origins; it's found in the Greek word spathe and the Latin word spatha. Both of those are terms that refer to long swords that often have broad flat blades for implements items used in practices as diverse as cooking, masonry, and medicine.
