About this deal

It was a glittering event full of A-listers, hosted by Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh, a celebrity couple who’d conquered both Hollywood and Broadway. And now Eve Dallas has made her entrance—but not as a guest. After raising a toast, Fitzhugh fell to the floor and died, with physical symptoms pointing to cyanide, and the police have crashed the party.

Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage’s life hangs in the balance—in the new In Death novel by #1 New York Times bestselling J. D. Robb. New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two—but they’d been equally desperate. Mavis, Leonardo, Bella, Charles, Louise, Nadine, etc. all appear in this one. I think it's a first in a long time that these characters were all in the same book together.

Unfortunately, they didnt get away fast enough. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene.

The murders and scenarios bring up some bad memories for Eve and, as usual, these are dealt with in a sympathetic manner - we feel her pain, her sadness but Roarke is always on hand to take care of 'his cop'. ❤️ Was Nora putting together a homage to some of the 19th century authors? Oscar Wilde for Dorian, Bram Stoker for Mina? High Fives to Robb on another wowzer! Desperation In Death was just as amazing as I had hoped -- fully satisfying. Superbly well-drawn, fast paced and filled with chills, spills and thrills. Could not put it down. Desperation in Death by J. D. Robb (pseudonym for Nora Roberts) brings murder, suspense, and anguish to a well-written futuristic police procedural set in New York City during the spring of 2061. What happens when children are abducted and exploited? To learn the history of the murderer, the author intersperses the current timeline (NOW) with past events (BEFORE) – so you’ll know the traumatic events in her/his life. The murderer’s identity will surprise you, but there are hints. As much as the plot is structured in such a way that longtime readers can connect it to Dallas' past without problems and thus develop a whole set of expectations with respect to a more intimate development in the relationship between her and Roarke, what unfortunately remains, at the end of the book, is a murder mystery, nice and I have no problem to admit it, but still just a murder mystery. Nothing to remind me one of those books of the past, in which the mysteries to be solved were just a side dish to the relationship of the two main characters.... Too bad, but I won't stop hoping, even after book #55. All About The In Death Series The In Death series is written by author JD Robb (a pseudonym for New York Times Bestselling author Nora Roberts). The series started in 1995 with Naked In Death with book one that introduced us to Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke. The books are romantic suspense novels but with heavy aspects of a mystery crime thriller.

Add to that the usual Fifty-esque diet and clothing scenes and you've got an installment that, while much better, doesn't quite hit the five-star mark. Although Desperation in Death is set in the future, there are not as many features shown on display for the reader to geek out over in this novel. One exception is the really fast helicopter that Roarke owns that gets a few members of the team from one place to another. Most of the Naked In Death series feature futuristic technology and ideas, which is something I enjoy. The most richly accomplished of the brothers’ pairings to date—and given Connelly’s high standards, that’s saying a lot. The writing in this one was weird for me. I felt like I was reading a Nora Roberts standalone and not a J.D. Robb book. It felt a bit surreal at times. We have this one playing with different narrative styles. We have a "Before" time following a young woman who we don't know who she is, but that she seems to be important to the case. Also as I said above, Robb follows one of the kidnapped victims in this one. In fact, we get some of the kidnap victims perspective in this one. I don't think that has been done ever in this series. If we do follow the victims, it just seems to be right before they were murdered. We get a sense of them and that's it. This one we delved in deep. We also get to read a letter and it just once again didn't feel like a Robb book, but a Nora Roberts romantic suspense novel. I don't know yet if this is good or bad, but I saw some readers were having trouble with this so I thought I just bring it up. I also bring it up because I noticed it and it kept throwing my reading.Eve is an amazing character that J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) has blessed her readers with. Multidimensional emotions, including being tough on the outside, but with strong sensitivities when it comes to handling cases such as this. Also, Eve's past comes through from time-to-time, and this is one of the ways that allows her billionaire husband Roarke to shine through, as he helps her through the trauma that was her past.
