In celebration of their wedding, this collection includes a full set of the British coins from their wedding year, 1947, along with the stamps and crown coin issued to commemorate their first major wedding anniversary in 1972. The silver crown coin is the first British coin ever issued in celebration of a Royal Wedding Anniversary making it of great significance to collectors.
Decimalisation had a profound impact on the currency as the sub-units of the pound were changed. Prior to decimalisation, one pound was worth 20 shillings, and one shilling was worth 12 pence meaning one pound was 240 pence. The first crown-sized coin to be issued following Decimalisation Day on 15th February 1971, the denomination was updated from 5 shillings to 25 new pence. Despite being produced in their millions and being available at face value from most post offices and banks, the ordinary business strike was a Royal Mint commemorative issue and not intended for general circulation. It’s important to note that the coins were not issued for standard circulation, as the Crown became much more of a commemorative coin in the 20th century compared to centuries before when it was an ordinary circulating coin that would be used in daily life. Does This Mean It Is Rare? The silver crown coin of 1972 was the first British crown ever to celebrate a royal marriage or anniversary. It was also the very first crown coin of the decimal era. First and foremost it was minted to commemorate the Silver Anniversary of the Royal Wedding between Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten which took place on Thursday 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey in London. The 1972 crown was the first British coin to have a face value of 25 pence. Previous crowns had been Five Shillings face value. The absence of an inscription denoting the face value now causes some confusion, particularly because, as from 1990, it appears to have been decided that future crowns would assume a Five Pounds face value.
The coins were issued for commemorative purposes and were not intended for circulation, although they remain legal tender and must be accepted at Post Offices. [1] The coins weigh 28.28g (0.909ozt) and have a diameter of 38.61mm.
