On the nose, you can immediately smell the roses that are one of the botanicals included. As a lover of dried apricots and figs, I am sent into bliss by my first sip. You are definitely reminded that it’s 40%ABV, but the finish is smooth and ends with a nod to the citrus family. How does Metaxa taste Metaxa 7 Stars takes it up a notch with a sweeter honeyed note, and the 12 Stars offer a light hint of citrus. Still, the Grande Fine infuses all the Stars in a stunning decanter that tastes incredible and makes a gorgeous gift. This pinnacle of Metaxa excellence contains blends from the original casks first used in the original distillery in Piraeus. These casks have been under the protection of the Metaxa Master for five generations. Some people will call Metaxa a brandy, because of the mixture of distilled wines and other additives that create the blend. This spirit uses only wines and ingredients from the Aegean Sea area, making it a truly Greek brandy. Metaxa comes in many star-rated expressions . There is Metaxa 5 star, Metaxa 7 star, and Metaxa 12 star. Like whisky, the number indicates that the youngest spirit in the bottle is 12 years old. There can be older spirits as well, but 12 is the youngest here, making it the grand-daddy of the house of Metaxa.

On the nose it’s like a brandy, but a brandy with a subtle difference. There’s a floral sweetness in there but it’s a really rich floral sweetness, not the subtler notes you might get with a Scotch or a brandy. That’s because Metaxa also has botanicals in it, including rose petals. There’s a hint of violets in there too, probably a spin-off from the roses. Perhaps figs as well, another sweetness, and a hint of dark coffee richness. It’s certainly an interesting aroma and not quite like anything else while resembling both brandy and whisky.
