In this review, I’ll take a look at the Atomos Ninja V and what it has to offer. This review might seem a bit late as the Ninja V has been available for a few years.

Improvements to accuracy of WiFi connection status, including status shown in the WiFi menu tab and the changing status of the WiFi icon in the top info bar. USB audio devices may not work with Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS. USB audio does seem to work okay with Firefox on Android. For this test, I used a selection of LUTs from BounceColour. Enter the three words that are displayed in the Ninja's CONNECT menu after pressing the “Pair” button. At the bottom of the Ninja V is the AtomXpand port which is partly hidden under the battery compartment. This accepts a whole range of Atomos expansion modules and supports up to 4K 60p and 12-channels digital 24-bit 96KHz audio.The first modules to be released are the AtomX Sync and AtomX SDI. If you try to grade 4:2:0 8-bit shot in Log on a mirrorless camera then it can be tough as the color information just isn’t there. The extra data recorded by the Atomos Ninja V make a big difference, and make shooting Log on mirrorless cameras a sensible option. Live Streaming is only available when using standard YCC 422 video inputs, and when the record codec is set to either ProRes or DNx. If ProRes RAW or H.265 are selected as the record codec, streaming isn't available. Likewise, a full-sized HDMI to micro HDMI cable is also widely available. You can get an official Atomos cable, but from experience I’ve found buy a decent quality alternative rather than the AAtomos branded version, they’re a lot cheaper and tend to be better quality.

Atomos has announced a completely free means of remotely controlling their Ninja V, and Ninja V+ field monitors and released a new firmware update to control fan speed. If you shoot a mirrorless camera that has a clean HDMI output, there is often a huge improvement in the quality of the footage if you output to an external drive. Most cameras record 4:2:0 in 8-bit internally, but via HDMI can output 4:2:2 in 8 or 10-bit. That gives a lot more color information and is a huge benefit if you are shooting Log footage to maximize dynamic range. Adding &showonly=SOME_OBS_VIRTUALCAM to the guest invite links allows for only a single video to be seen by the guests; this can be output of the OBS Virtual Camera for example Addition of updated program recording options. Choose “Clean” to record a clean feed of the currently switched to input or use the new “CAST Program” mode. In CAST Program mode, graphical overlays and the picture in picture (PiP) get recorded onto the SSD/HDD inserted in the Ninja V. The recording contains the new “Dip to”-transitions as well as the Fade In/Fade Out buttons used to fade in or fade out of your program during recording.

In terms of capture, virtually any HDMI or SDI source is supported, including cameras from Nikon, Fujifilm, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Z-Cam, Olympus, RED and ARRI. RAW Over HDMI Every detail, meticulously preserved Interlaced signals are now supported. An automatic pulldown conversion gets applied to them, which then gets conformed to the Project Rate. The less than ideal form factor and handling of interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) have led many manufacturers to design handy and innovative solutions for video; from housings, mics, handles, and of course, monitors.
