About this deal

Even my publisher was skeptical of what I wrote. Denis didn't believe there was a stretch of road in the mostly-flat Twin Cities with a cliff that a car could be forced off. We had to drive him out Hwy 169 (then County Road 18) on the way to Flying Cloud Airport to show him where it "actually" happened. Omaha" the Cat Dancer takes place in the fictional Mipple City, Minnesota. The comic's universe is populated by anthropomorphic animal characters. [16] The story began as a satire of local blue laws, before evolving into a comic book soap opera. [2] [16] Characters [ edit ]

The strip debuted in the funny animal magazine Vootie, and it was subsequently published in a number of underground comix in the late 1970s and early 1980s. "Omaha" the Cat Dancer became the subject of the eponymous comic book series published from 1984 to 1993 by Kitchen Sink Press; it was relaunched by Fantagraphics Books through 1995. The final chapters of the strip's storyline were published in Sizzle magazine, beginning in 2006.

Time is strange in Omaha. The series started in the late 70s, and the entire plot unfolds within less than a year, I think? Perhaps just a couple of months, even. But they keep the era vague — but Omaha has an answering machine, so they’re not trying to pretend that it’s taking place in 2012. Biography of Reed Waller". CatDancer Corporation. Doing a project like "The Flower Chamber" is more like making a movie than a comic book. Set building and dressing, costumes, lighting, photographic direction. I used the creations of many talented modelers to make this possible. Everyone will be credited in the final book. All art rendered in Firefly from PoserPro 10. Waller, Reed;Worley, Kate.April 5, 2007. The Complete Omaha the Cat Dancer, volume6,Amerotica.ISBN: 1561635057. And I do like it, very much. It's consistently one of the best comics being published today. Reed Waller has been consistently improving his craft as an artist since it began. Kate Worley's dialogue is economical, well-observed and effective. I care about their people, and am absorbed by their story. As for influence, I think we're looking at the long game. I've heard from women in comics who cite Kate's work as a major inspiration for their own careers. Terry Moore has gone on record about how "Omaha" was an early touchstone when he was starting "Strangers in Paradise." The fact that "Omaha" could succeed so well for so long is an example for other creators who want to look outside the standard violence-or-comedy options that restrict creativity in comics. The fact that there's interest in ending the story after so long says a lot about its enduring quality -- and the number of foreign-language editions that have been published in the last couple of years tells me that its impact isn't just local. I think we're going to continue to see that influence, that legacy, for years to come in work that hasn't even been started yet. I wrote about Omaha in the Fantagraphics blog series, so I’m not going to repeat myself here. But since I covered these mostly-Kitchen Sink comics in the Fantagraphics series, so why not talk about the NBM volume of The Complete Omaha in the Kitchen Sink blog series?

You touched on this in one of the introductions, but could you talk a little about when you first read "Omaha" and meeting Reed and Kate? The second issue, though, is another kettle of… cats. Here you get many pieces that seem totally irrelevant (to the left) among the more fun ones (Scott McCloud to the right). And people seem to be, in general, not just dashing off something they had lying around, but creating thoughtful, interesting things, like Howard Cruse here, riffing on Krazy Kat.

After two chapters had been completed, Waller was unable to continue with the story. The third chapter was completed with help from Kate Worley, who continued to write the series thereafter. [2] In August 1988, Worley was injured in a car accident; the series' frequency slowed as a result of her recovery process. [4] In November 1991, Waller was diagnosed with colon cancer; two issues of Images of "Omaha" were published in 1992 to pay for Waller's medical expenses, featuring art and writing by several major comic creators. [4] In 1995, Waller and Worley ceased production of the series. [5] In 2002, Waller and Worley agreed to complete the story; Worley was diagnosed with lung cancer, and began chemotherapy and radiation treatments in that year. [4] On June 6, 2004, Worley died before completing the story; her husband, James Vance began to edit and complete the final chapters. I see no need to defend Kate, whose own reputation is secure among the great writers of comics. But in defense of both of us, i think I should say something about the origin of the material that started this.
