Solution – As fans what we can do is at least call them out online and that we would prefer that they endorsed healthier products. However, the master Pan Parag commercial which would surely find itself among the classics that played on the telly in its formative days was the one that featured Ashok Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, each holding a tin of the blue and yellow Pan Parag. Interestingly, the two giants of Hindi cinema came together for the first and the last time through that ad. Kapoor once said in an interview that it fulfilled his dream of working together with Ashok Kumar. But that bit of detail fades in contrast to what the message the commercial — which otherwise tried selling a product not for the health conscious — gave out to its customers. This is why the IARC has classified pan, both with and without tobacco, as carcinogenic. Although the IARC does not specifically mention pan masala in its list of carcinogens, it goes without saying that pan masala is also a carcinogen given that it contains the same ingredients as pan. And that’s exactly what pan masala companies did! They removed the tobacco and started advertising the new and improved, completely safe tobacco-free pan masala. The Vimal Pan Masala ad is an example of this. Is pan masala harmful still? If the pan masala companies are behaving themselves, why am I writing this article? Because tobacco is not the only carcinogen in pan masala.

All said, my neighbourhood pan bidi-shop run by Rajveer has reported a spike in the sales of Pan Vilas Elaichi. No, he does not sell gutka. Put another way, if you were selling pencils and making only 10 rupees but spending 1000 rupees per day to market your pencils, your pencil business isn’t going to last for a long time. The study suggests that the Pan Parag pan masala advertisements were actually a surrogate for the company’s tobacco products i.e., the company advertises its non-tobacco products but makes money by selling the tobacco products. Additionally, the number of people in India at the time that actually used tobacco-free pan masala was too small to require such heavy ad spends which again suggests that they are a surrogate for their tobacco products. I also wanted to understand why it is so difficult for law enforcement authorities to regulate the use of these products. I realised that the laws are heavily focused only on tobacco and NOT on carcinogens in general which is why companies simply remove tobacco but keep the other carcinogens in. Betel nut is in the same category as tobacco in the list of carcinogens, yet tobacco is the only one that receives all the negative publicity. Two things. One, the pan-Indian idea of ‘baraatiyo ki swagat’ — as much feared by the “ladki wale” as it is considered a right by the “ladka walas” in a patriarchal society. The other, a related matter — rejection of dowry, a burning social issue in the early ’80s when there were as many as five deaths reported in the National Capital itself per day, even though we had an anti-dowry Act in place. Social recognition accompanied commercial success and the Lions Club named Vikram Kothari as its goodwill ambassador, said Saffar. As time went by, Rotomac Pens Pvt. Ltd was rechristened as the Rotomac Global Pvt. Ltd while Vikram Kothari moved into sectors like real estate, steel and infrastructure, hoping to replicate his success.

At that time, Vikram Kothari and his brother Deepak Kothari assisted their father Mansukhbhai in managing the ever-burgeoning paan masala empire. As business prospered, the group diversified and in 1992, the Rotomac Pen company was formed while “Yes", a mineral water brand, was launched a couple of years later.

An innovative problem-solver who was ahead of his time, Babuji first conceived the idea of a substitute for pan. His vision culminated in the launch of an exclusive pan masala that was branded as "Pan Parag", offering its consumers a refreshing twist on the traditional pan. The Pan Parag group came into being in August 1973.Most Indians do not know about the harmful effects of the other ingredients in pan and pan masala. They only know that tobacco can cause cancer due to public health initiatives but don’t know that betel nut can also cause cancer. In fact, many people believe that pan masalas are beneficial for mouth freshening, cleaning, and digestion due to their pleasant taste and sweetness. Pan masala companies take advantage of this by removing only tobacco from their pan masala and sell it as tobacco-free pan masala. Dharmendra Chaturvedi, head of the media cell of the Kanpur-based Kothari Chemicals which makes Pan Parag, also remembers the ad but fails to put together his thoughts on the impact it caused nearly three decades ago. He would rather have his CMD Deepak Kothari talk about it, “But he is out of the country. Call later,” says Chaturvedi. Anti Malaria Malaria is a serious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes. If it isn’t diagnosed and treated promptly, it can be fatal. A single mosquito bite is all it takes for someone to become infected. Symptoms of malaria It’s important to be aware of the symptoms of malaria if you’re travelling to areas where there’s a high risk of the disease. Symptoms include: 1. A high temperature of 38C or above 2. Feeling hot and shivery 3. Headaches 4. Vomiting 5. Muscle pains 6. Diarrhoea Symptoms usually appear between 7 and 18 days after becoming infected, but in some cases the symptoms may not appear for up to a year, or occasionally even longer. When to seek medical attention Seek medical help immediately if you develop symptoms of malaria during or after a visit to an area where the disease is found. You should still seek medical help even if it’s several weeks, months or a year after you return from travelling. If there’s a possibility you have malaria, a blood test will be carried out to confirm whether or not you’re infected. You should receive the results of your blood test on the same day. If you have malaria, treatment will… Those mounting deaths led to a lot of hue and cry, leading the Government in the mid-’80s to insert new sections into the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Veteran women’s rights activist and former chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Mohini Giri, recalls the times: “Dowry harassment and death were on top of the agenda of women activists then. There were women like Subhadra Butalia, Justice Sunanda Bhandare, who fought tooth and nail against dowry. For the first time, there was a demand for shelter homes for women because many women were turned out of their homes in dowry-related incidents and they had nowhere to go.” Giri terms the ’80s as “the brightest years of women’s movement in India.” No wonder when Agha passed away at a rather young age in 1995, along with the Helen starrer Sholay hit “Mehbooba mehbooba” where he hammered on the drums with abandon, the Pan Parag TV ad with the catchy jingle “Pan Parag pan masala” was also a point of recall for the general public. So was his print ad for the brand with yet another top-rated yesteryear Bollywood vamp, Kalpana Iyer. With those one-liners — “The taste of the good times”; “A certain taste, a certain style.” Dinesh Pouches Private Limited is one of the leading companies in the tobacco industry. It is well known for its flagship product "2100" which was launched in the year 1993 by Late Shri Jagannath Ji Malani. The company offers pan masala containing a blend of betelnuts, cardamom seeds, Kesar, kewda, sandalwood oil, lime, catechu, ruh khus, katha and natural perfumes. At present, the company has wide presence in the domestic markets of Rajasthan and Gujarat, with customers and distributors in other parts of India. 2. DS GroupThe aqueous and solvent (DMSO) extracts of the Manik Chand brand of PM with and without Zarda were prepared. A preliminary experiment to evaluate the toxic dose level was initiated by exposing mice to doses of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 2 g/kg bwt PM through the ip route. The animals could not tolerate doses of 0.5 g/kg b wt and above; therefore, the experimental animals were actually exposed to 8, 40 & 200 mg/kg bwt. One group (a) was exposed for two weeks ip, and another group was exposed through oral feeding for three months. Distilled water (0.1 mL) or DMSO (02 mL) was administered as a negative control, while benzo[a]pyrene or trichloroacetic acid was used as a positive control. After scheduled ip exposure, only histopathological and hematological evaluation could be done, whereas in the group exposed for 3 months, histopathological hematological cytogenetic and spermatological studies were performed. (b) Another group of animals received ethanol PM extract through oral intubations for ninety days. Special emphasis was placed on examining testicular tissue, and biochemical parameters, such as glycogen, cholesterol and protein, were estimated in testicular tissue. Histopathological alterations and the weights of different organs were also recorded. (c) For the chronic toxicity studies, PM with and without Zarda was mixed with feed and fed to the animals routinely. According to neighbour Saffar, Vikram Kothari has one son and two daughters. Both his daughters are married in business families, he added. The India pan masala market reached INR 43,410.2 Crore in 2022. The market is primarily driven by the rising disposable income levels of consumers. In addition, the easy product availability on e-commerce platforms represents another major growth-inducing factor. Besides this, the increasing number of retail shops, convenience stores, and supermarkets selling pan masala is also contributing to market growth. Moreover, the rising availability of various raw materials in the country required for manufacturing pan masala is expected to propel the market growth in the coming years. I suspect the game is a lot bigger. Even now a significant part of oral tobacco consumption or smokeless tobacco consumption is happening in the unbranded form. If you visit any large market in your city, you will find shops specialising in selling cut tobacco. India reportedly produces 700 million kg of tobacco. The gutka and pan masala market is estimated at around ₹40,000 crores. While the branded segment has grown in the last few decades, it is likely that a large part of India is still buying unbranded tobacco, mixing it with calcium hydroxide [chuna] and making their own version of gutka. The current gold rush of surrogate advertising [aka Elaichi Pearls] is probably just a replay of what Pan Parag did in the 1980s. Then it was moving from just supari nuts to pan masala. Now it is cut tobacco to flavoured gutka. Solution – Educate people about the harmful effects of all the other ingredients in pan masala and publicise the fact that the entire mixture is carcinogenic. India has banned direct and indirect advertisements of tobacco products. But tobacco companies can often circumvent such efforts through surrogate advertisements. ‘ Surrogate Advertising’ is duplicating the brand image of one product extensively to promote a banned product of the same brand. The product shown in the advertisement is called the ‘surrogate.’ The surrogate could either resemble the original product or could be a different product altogether from the same brand. A visionary leader, Late Shri Mansukhbhai Kothari was respectfully known as Babuji. A father figure to many of his employees, Babuji had over five decades' worth of experience in the manufacturing and marketing of consumer products. Babuji played an instrumental role in establishing the Pan Parag Group and was the driving force behind its remarkable growth. To this day, his values and work ethic continue to guide and motivate the Pan Parag team.

Warnings

The alcohol industry in India typically uses this a lot, for example, Bacardi does it by advertising music CDs (the surrogate) to promote alcohol (the actual product) but we all know we don’t go to Bacardi to refresh our playlists. Along with its newer ads, the Ashok Kumar-Shammi Kapoor commercial does peep through the small screen at us some times. Menaka says, “Because of the popularity of the Jalal Agha ad, we recreated it with Aman Verma, which was equally appreciated. We are rerunning the Ashok-Kumar Shammi Kapoor ad in different mediums now to create a sense of nostalgia for people.” One study in 2005 found that Pan Parag’s (a popular pan masala brand) annual cost of advertising on just 2 TV channels was 3.8 times greater than its annual sale value. Based on the study’s figures Pan Parag should have gone bankrupt but it didn’t! The commercial certainly touched a hot social subject then. Fabulous actor that he was, Ashok Kumar played out splendidly the role of an anxious father of an Indian bride, always on the edge when it comes to meeting demands from the groom’s family. That nervous half-laugh of relief towards the end when Shammi Kapoor insisted on welcoming his son’s marriage party with just Pan Parag, weaved into it a vital social truth of the times. Hence, the instant viewer connection. And a high recall value.
