About this deal

Ambitious adoption of circular economy approaches in the plastics value chain – i.e. applying upstream and downstream solutions together – can drive significant reductions in GHG emissions and waste disposal in the next decade and beyond. Microplastics alter soil biophysical properties which affect the quality of the soil. This affects soil biological activity, biodiversity and plant health. Microplastics in the soil alter a plant's growth. It decreases seedling germination, affects the number of leaves, stem diameter and chlorophyll content in these plants. [96]

In addition, CORE PATH has a geo-textile membrane on the underside, which prevents weeds from coming through, minimises maintenance and enhances long-lasting durability.

The renewable material pathway

Women are represented in all surgical specialities and at all levels of surgical training however there are still fewer female surgeons compared to male counterparts. Only 25% of plastic surgeon consultants in England are female based on 2019 data from NHS Digital (2) Conceptualisation: YM, TE; Methodology: YM, TE; Software: YM; Validation: YM, TE; Formal analysis: YM, TE, MK, CL; Investigation: YM; Data curation: YM; Writing–original draft: YM; Writing–review and editing: YM, TE, MK, CL, HN; Visualisation: YM; Supervision: TE, HN; Project administration: YM; Funding acquisition: TE. Becoming a plastic surgeon is highly competitive. Following completion of the two-year foundation programme, trainees enter core surgical training where they rotate between different surgical specialities each rotation lasting 4-6 months. In 2019, there were 2.93 applicants for every core surgical training post (4).The Scar Free Foundation is the research funding body set up by BAPRAS. It supports patient’s health relating to reconstructive/plastic surgery. The relatively low price of plastics, as well as the current design of most plastic-containing products, does not naturally encourage longer use, repair, reuse or sharing. Therefore, it is important to increase motivation to take action and scale up existing good practice examples, including those reducing the need for plastics or improving reuse systems (OECD, 2022). The approaches used in these good practice examples may not always be more convenient, but they will be necessary in the transition to a more circular and sustainable use of plastics. Plastic surgery is rewarding as procedures have the capacity to drastically improve a patient's quality of life. Qualities required include visuospatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, leadership skills, stamina to cope with the role and communication skills. Personal emotional resilience is required due the exposure to patients who have undergone severe trauma and disfigurement. A career in plastic surgery suits those with great attention to detail and manual dexterity due to the precise techniques used in plastic surgery such as microsurgery. Other surgical techniques and procedures often used in plastic surgery include skin grafts, tissue expansion and flap surgery.

Plastic surgery is still a relatively small specialty. However, the number of consultant posts has doubled in the last twenty years and it has become an integral part of hospital practice. For more information onsalaries within the NHS, please feel free to review The Complete Guide to NHS Pay. This ratio is the highest of all the medical and surgical specialities. It is followed by trauma and orthopaedic surgery that sits at 1.40 and then neurosurgery at 1.00 (7). In 2019, the group Break Free From Plastic organized over 70,000 volunteers in 51 countries to collect and identify plastic waste. These volunteers collected over "59,000 plastic bags, 53,000 sachets and 29,000 plastic bottles," as reported by The Guardian. Nearly half of the items were identifiable by consumer brands. The most common brands were Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Pepsico. [50] [51] According to the global campaign coordinator for the project Emma Priestland in 2020, the only way to solve the problem is stopping production of single use plastic and using reusable products instead. [52] [53] China is the biggest consumer of single-use plastics. [54]

Apart from simulating the transport and (re)distribution of MPW that has been added to a river basin, the Plastic Pathfinder can also compute the most likely transport directions of MPW within a river basin for a given set of weather conditions. For this, the model registers for each grid cell in the river basin whether the weather conditions trigger MPW transport, and if so, in which direction. This is done for each time step and for each grid cell, the model keeps count of how often MPW transport is forced in each of the eight transport directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW). By the end of the last time step, each grid cell has obtained a transport direction distribution. These transport direction distributions are shown in a ‘potential plastics routing map’, whereby the width of the MPW transport arrows are linearly proportional to the frequency with which MPW transport was forced in that particular direction. One example of an initiative to counter this trend is a forthcoming proposal from the European Commission to limit unsubstantiated green claims and for companies to refer to only exact and measurable shares of biobased plastic content in products (EC, 2022).

The increased circularity of plastics pathway

Plastic surgery is a fast-growing speciality due to the increasing demand for aesthetic surgery and the potential to use stem cell technology to replace current fillers. In the future, plastic surgery might include more non-invasive, non-surgical treatments such as fat-freezing and fat burning as fat reduction techniques.
