About this deal

Oh, and we’ve saved the best until last. Rhino Hero comes with its eponymous hero in the form of a grinning rhino meeple – brilliant – and if your roof card has the rhino symbol on it, the next player has to move the rhino onto that roof card’s symbol! Okay, I will level with you. Start scratching away at the surface and you’ll realise the theme here is thinner than an old person’s 50-year-old handkerchief. Why are these animals climbing the building? Why are spider monkey’s evil? Why are the heroes fighting each other!? I just don’t know! But, never fear, because this is the best part of Super Battle.

At the beginning of Rhino Hero, each player is dealt a hand of 5 ceiling cards. The first player starts at the ground floor, taking two wall cards (which are cards that are bent to a 90 degree angle) and placing them on a template that shows the required shape the walls need to form. Ceiling cards may have special powers that activate after they are placed. Powers include causing the next player to draw an extra card or lose a turn, allowing a second ceiling card to be played immediately, or causing the next player to have to move the Rhino from its current position to the highest level ceiling. More than this too – it’s a game that in later stages hugely benefits from being able to orbit the table like a pool player eyeing up the ideal shot. The way the walls are built mean that sometimes there will be physical barriers that stop someone reaching in for the rhino from a particular direction. The nature of play means that sometimes you’ll need to place different walls while standing in different positions. It’s not likely to be a suitable or satisfying game regardless of what physical constraints may require accommodation. It’s great to see that so many people can play it even if there are large demographics that won’t be able to give it a go. It’s not our position on Meeple Like Us that every game can feasibly be accessible to every player – just that everyone has access to great games they can play.HABA have long been experts in creating exciting, fun, learning games for children. Rhino Hero first and foremost teaches children basic hand management and dexterity skills and patience. But it does more than that, because it’s one of the most perfect party games out there for adults, too. If ever there was an ice-breaker in a box, Rhino Hero would be it.

Placement of the walls too requires players to be mindful of the disposition of the other walls in the structure. It might be necessary to slightly offset walls to deal with small but compounding mis-alignments at lower floors of the architecture. The way around you play roofs too is going to be influenced by this, and determining points of maximum pressure for other players is going to involve microanalysis at the visual level. True, this is only if you’re playing to win. If you’re in a competitive group visual impairment is going to be a serious hindrance to effective play.Roll the light blue die. The number rolled indicates how many floors your superhero can be moved up the skyscraper. Rhino Hero is about a heroic rhinoceros, clad in a cape and cowl, trying to scale a skyscraper! (If that hasn’t grabbed your attention, nothing will.) Technically this is a children’s game by hugely popular publisher HABA, but don’t let that put you off. While you can – and will – enjoy this with children of all ages (realistically aged five and up, for them to grasp the dexterity concept), it’s also guaranteed to be a smash hit with the adults, too! We strongly recommend Rhino Hero in both categories of cognitive accessibility. Emotional Accessibility
