Improvements to criminal justice

Kendall, Elizabeth (1981). The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy. Abrams & Chronicle Books. ISBN 978-1419744853 January 12: Caryn Eileen Campbell (23): Disappeared from a hotel hallway in Snowmass, Colorado; [156] body discovered on a dirt road near the hotel with skull fractures and knife wounds on February 17. [157]

In September, Bundy sold his Volkswagen Beetle to a Midvale teenager. [183] Utah police impounded it, and FBI technicians dismantled and searched it. They found hairs matching samples obtained from Campbell's body. [184] Later, they also identified hair strands "microscopically indistinguishable" from those of Smith and DaRonch. [185] FBI lab specialist Robert Neill concluded that the presence of hair strands in one car matching three different victims who had never met one another would be "a coincidence of mind-boggling rarity". [186] In 1975, Bundy was arrested and jailed in Utah for aggravated kidnapping and attempted criminal assault. He then became a suspect in a progressively longer list of unsolved homicides in several states. Facing murder charges in Colorado, Bundy engineered two dramatic escapes and committed further assaults in Florida, including three murders, before his ultimate recapture in 1978. For the Florida homicides, he received three death sentences in two trials, and was executed at Florida State Prison in Raiford on January 24, 1989. Bundy appeal brief" (PDF). law.fsu.edu. Bundy: The Deliberate Stranger was written by Seattle Times reporter Richard W. Larsen and published in 1980. Larsen covered politics for the Times and had interviewed Bundy in 1972, several years before he became a murder suspect, when Bundy worked as a volunteer for the re-election campaign of Gov. Daniel J. Evans and had been seen trailing the campaign of Evans' Democratic opponent with a video camera.

Interstates and technological limitations

The night before his execution, Bundy confessed to 30 homicides, but the true total remains unknown, and Bundy occasionally made cryptic comments to encourage speculation. [313] He told Aynesworth in 1980 that for every murder "publicized", there "could be one that was not." [377] When FBI agents proposed a total tally of 36, Bundy responded, "Add one digit to that, and you'll have it." [378] Years later he told Nelson that the common estimate of 35 was accurate, [313] but Keppel wrote that "[Ted] and I both knew [the total] was much higher." [77] In an interview, Keppel stated his belief that Bundy had killed "at least 50, and maybe 75." [379] Bundy's Will Requests Cremation and Scattering of Ashes in Washington". Deseret News. After graduating from high school in 1965, Bundy attended the University of Puget Sound (UPS) for one year before transferring to the University of Washington (UW) to study Chinese. [41] In 1967, he became romantically involved with a UW classmate, Diane Edwards (identified in Bundy biographies by several pseudonyms, most commonly Stephanie Brooks). [42] "He saw a woman who was the epitome of his dreams," Rule wrote. "[Edwards] was like no girl he had ever seen before, and he considered her the most sophisticated, the most beautiful creature possible." He was accepted to and attended law school in Utah, though he never earned his degree. Rule met Bundy in 1971 when he was a psychology student at the University of Washington and contemplating a career in law and politics. They worked together at a crisis center taking telephone calls from those at risk of suicide or facing other difficulties. [2] The man was described as tall, handsome and identified himself as "Ted." A sketch based on eyewitness descriptions was noted by several people—including Rule—to resemble Bundy. Rule thought it unlikely that Bundy was a killer but nonetheless reported him to police. However, authorities were overwhelmed with tips regarding the murders and did not initially believe Bundy was a likely suspect due to his superficially respectable persona.

The book spawned a television miniseries of the same title, starring Mark Harmon as Bundy, that aired on NBC on May 4–5, 1986. Perhaps Bundy’s most well-known girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer would eventually help police arrest the suspected serial killer. He and Kloepfer began a six-year relationship in 1969 after meeting in a Seattle bar. She was a single mom of a young daughter and struggled with alcoholism. Bundy took care of her, and she said he was “warm and loving.”
