Granted, calling the demons in this story "evil" is a major stretch, but every time Mao-Mao has tried her hand at "torturing" the Princess, she's completely failed to get anything out of her due to being too harmless, not even damaging in the emotional sense. The only reason she managed to get anything out of the Princess at all was because of how endearingly cute she is.

It does ultimately work out, with Gekkou winning a new writer's prize for his picture book.

She herself is also sentenced to die this way, but Kaito interrupts her execution at the end of volume 3. Death Seeker: In public, Elizabeth openly and proudly welcomes her death sentence, even telling a priest praying for her at her execution pyre to can it, feeling it is the right of the people of the world to demand vengeance for all the innocents she slew. In private, she just wants her hellish life to finally end. Initially starts off very business like, growing into platonic as the story moves forward though Kaito is more obviously very much attracted to her, though it's complicated by both his status as her Servant, half assed protégé, later half assed enemy, later savior. It even culminates in not just a date during the invasion of the capital, shows itself a pang of brief but intense jealousy when Kaito and Hina consummate their marriage via their blood connection, to Kaito outright declaring his love for Elisabeth at the climax of Volume 5 before freeing her. In short, the 2 have a VERY complex relationship that is NOT purely platonic and goes right past romantic love. It's not exactly familial either. For Elisabeth, Kaito is both her first real, true companion and first love... ever. For Kaito, Elisabeth is both his Hero, object of eternal gratitude, family, and kindred hurt spirit. The 2 are just that close. Even Hina wouldn't object since she's Kaito's bride and he's Elisabeth's servant, but she loves them both near equally.... it's almost kind of a given that instead of 'platonic life partners' you'd get a genuine 'One True Threeseome' with how deep the feelings run here, and they very much do.
