Denon doesn’t cut corners on sound performance either. The punchy 60-watt amp means that you can get incredible volume and fantastic audio quality at every level. The mids are exceptionally clear, while the highs sound beautifully crisp. Everything else is pretty much covered, a great deal of it by the inclusion of the Denon/Marantz wireless multiroom platform HEOS. This you’ll control via the HEOS app on your phone or tablet, and it is one of the best and simplest control apps for such platforms. If you’re in the market for a mini HiFi system that’s big on performance, then this could be the product you’ve been looking for. As for more traditional sources there are screw-in antennas for the twin radio tuners onboard the Denon, delivering FM and digital DAB+ radio in addition to the internet radio delivered by HEOS. There’s no AM here, but all AM stations are almost certainly available at better quality via internet or DAB+ radio. I have considered going cheap with the DM41 v spending more on small 2/3 box units but the N11 appears to be middle ground which would suit. The high quality CD mechanism plays all your compact disc in high quality as it is especially designed to minise vibration which could influence the audio quality. It plays MP3 and WMA files too.
HEOS also delivers multiroom operation. Put another HEOS-compatible player elsewhere in your home and the ‘Rooms’ section of the HEOS app makes it ever so simple to have the same music playing to several or to all HEOS devices at once, whether they be HEOS-equipped soundbars, wireless speakers, even monumental AV receivers. You can also play the inputs of one device over the network to other HEOS devices, but – importantly – only the analogue inputs, not digital ones. We continued to some Tidal streaming; there’s no unfolding of MQA Masters here for high-res streaming (as rival streaming system BluOS offers), but it’s arguable whether high-res is going to improve the excellent sound we enjoyed, whether punching up some bouncy REM or delivering the drifting flow of Philip Glass’s Closing. There was a limit to the size of bass the speakers could deliver, but the deep underlying organ note under Closing was certainly present, if not fully resonant. Let’s just admit it: even for an (experienced) old stereo fan, there is not always time and desire to make a ritual out of listening to music. Sometimes you just want to press a button and move on with what you are doing.

First of all, you get a CD-player built-in, so you can play your music collection as much as you like. You can also stream through your home network with Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth. The Denon also connects to a whole-house wireless audio system, so you can turn up the volume around your house. With something to suit virtually every taste, this company has tried its hand at headphones, Hi-Fi systems, home theatres and more. In other words, if you’re looking for high-quality audio, then Denon gives you a good place to start. The Denon CEOL N10 uses a new Texas Instruments TAS5142 amplifier chip, which signal is fed digitally without any intermediate DA/AD conversion, thus avoiding inherent noise and distortion. We nearly forgot the CD player, so sidelined has this format become in our lives today. But those with silver to spin can be assured that this source was a highlight in terms of clarity and dynamics. The Painted Ladies’ version of Vic Simms’ Poor Folks Happiness drove forth with a full bassline, vocals and guitars well defined.
The CEOL-N10 is incredibly easy to control. You can use the system itself, thanks to a series of easy-to-use buttons, or the included remote control. For the kitchen I have an old Marantz CR603. Over the years the DAB gave up and the online services available shrank as Marantz removed 3rd party integration ( still a thing I gather here). We use the radio a lot (FM/AM but DAB would cover most stations I hope), the CD occasionally and use the aux for phone. Would definitely want to have more streaming options. Have considered keeping the 603 but adding a Bluesound Node. Sorta prefer to keep it simple in kitchen (family use - presets preferred!). Sound quality is important to me but for kitchen use, it's not so critical. They also have built-in phono stages so they can be hooked straight up to a system, and both feature unique dust covers that can be removed and used to rest a vinyl album sleeve against. Once you've set up your HEOS speaker system, you can stream music effortlessly via the dedicated HEOS app. Available for Apple iOS and Android, the app not only lets you stream your stored music but also Internet radio services and popular streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal, Napster and Deezer. Indeed it is our favourite radio platform, the only one to offer our local community radio station along with quite a few others – 100,000 stations, says TuneIn, along with 5.7 million podcasts, so if it’s your first time playing with internet radio, this should keep you busy for a while. Like the DNP-800NE, the N10 also built on the HEOS streaming platform. But not content with offering a vast assortment of hi-res network streaming options, it also offers Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, Internet radio, optical inputs, FM/AM radio and a built-in CD player. It will also get the AirPlay 2 update in August.
