When this reviewer covered the original 7950 model five years ago, I described its appearance as being a ‘little too Jetsons’, and the 7590 AX has a similar signature styling. AVM also has a side line in Fritz!-branded smart home devices including smart plugs, and smart radiator thermostats. While these aren’t as well known in the UK as brands like Honeywell and Hive, if you’re keen on being able to control your heating and cut down on bills, there’s the option to do that and control everything via your router. Many router makers, Netgear being a prime example, want customers to use a mobile application to configure a router for deployment. Like a lot of routers, the Fritz!Box 7530 AX will automatically prioritise the strongest, most stable connection available, even if it’s not the fastest. This means in practical terms, the further you move away from the 7530 AX, the sooner you’ll be bumped off of the faster 5GHz and moved on to the slower (but more readily available) 2.4GHz band. With Express you get super fast servers in 94 countries The 7590 AX has expanded vertically over its predecessor and has a more pleasant shape that’s reminiscent of telecoms hardware from the 1990s.
The price is admittedly high, though once you factor in all the extra hardware, you might need to bring a cheap 2400AC class router up to the specification of the 7590 AX, then it isn’t excessive. Router compatibility - This allows you to install the VPN and connect at the router level. Unfortunately, you cannot install a VPN onto a FritzBox directly. That means you will need to install it on a separate router and link that router to your FritzBox. Surfshark - This VPN boasts incredible value for money with a great range of features for Fritz!Box.
