Two hands holding each other materialize a social experience of identity, otherness, and intimacy. Feminist theorist and scholar of science studies Karen Barad describes the moment experienced by the Brownings and captured by Hosmer: “When two hands touch, there is a sensuality of the flesh, an exchange of warmth, a feeling of pressure, of presence, a proximity of otherness that brings the other nearly as close as oneself. Perhaps closer”. For Barad, two hands touching causes each individual to recognize “an infinity of others” and even “the otherness of the self”, to others but also to oneself. 81 In this description, boundaries are real but not sealed, and one’s own body can be revealed to be not only one’s own. The intertwining of the Brownings’ hands projects the sensual meaning invoked by Barad, especially in light of the Brownings’ romantic relationship. Absent this context, however, such a gesture might also be interpreted as transactional, as in two hands shaking upon achieving professional agreement. In both instances, the gesture embodies social experiences. Clasped Hands plays with this phenomenon, as the mold-making process eliminates any distinction between the two hands and unites them in a single negative space. Before applying your mist coat, it is a good idea to wipe down the plaster on your walls. Use a damp cloth to do this. This will help to remove any fine dust particles from the surface of the walls which could negatively affect the mist coat and any subsequent coats of paint. Mold containersI used 1/2 gallon jugs, 1/2 gallon juice bottles, and 2 liter pop bottles. The only difference was that when I needed to cut away the mold, the plastic juice bottle and 2 liter bottles were a little harder to cut. We advise wearing gloves and long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from the plaster particles. Some people opt to wear a plastic hair net or hat to prevent the dust from collecting in their hair. Keep in mind that while the parts are made of fairly tough plaster, it is still easy to scratch and damage. Clearcoating, or painting, is recommended for long term durability. As the part is heavy and cold (high thermal mass), a bronze or other metallic paint will cause many to wonder if it is really metal.
A good quality paint brush - this is essential for keeping your edges clean and applying water to your plaster. Make sure the mold is free of debris and water, and then fill it with casting compound. If you intend to pull more than one casting from this mold, or do not want to break the mold to remove the casting, consider using a mold release spray inside the mold before pouring. Finger Plaster: A finger plaster cast is used to immobilize and protect a fractured or broken finger. It only covers the affected finger, allowing the patient's hand to move as needed. This cast is also often used for chronic conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, and the trigger finger.Hot waterA cold mold is uncomfortable, so start with hot water. By the time you get it mixed it should be at a comfortably warm temperature.
