Mix together the sugar, glucose and 80ml of water in a pan and bring to the boil to make your sugar syrup. Cook the mixture until it reaches 120C on a sugar thermometer. Mucilage is what gives mallow its anti-inflammatory properties. Historically, the herb has been used to heal digestive and urinary tract irritations, and even control coughs caused by inflammation.

Mallows grow between 10 and 200cm tall depending on the species. Most mallows grow upright and form simple or branched green stems, some with a red tint. Biennial species form a rosette of leaves in the first year and flower the following summer. The hairless or lightly hairy alternate Malva leaves are lobed and oval or round, and they each grow from a stalk. Mallow flowers also grow from stalks which emerge from the leaf axils individually or in groups of up to four. Each flower has five petals that are broadly triangular. Their colours can range from white to pink to purple and many have deeper shades toward the centre of the flower. After pollination, mallows form flat, disc-shaped seed capsules, which then break into several parts when mature, releasing the mallow’s seeds. Mallow flowers each have five individual petals Are mallows perennial? Dandies’ vegan marshmallows are great for toasting. They crisp up as soon as the fire hits them, caramelising beautifully. Sadly, I found that these didn’t toast as well as others I tried. They took longer to toast than the other marshmallows I tested, requiring a sustained blast of heat from the blowtorch. Marshmallows were one of the things I missed the most when I went vegan, so Anandas’ veggie mallows will always have a special place in my heart for being the OG gelatine free marshmallow maker in the UK.Marina’: another tall variety, this 120cm tall mallow has soft purple flowers with dark stripes. It prefers dry soil and is suitable for growing in planters. a b c d " Malva Tourn. ex L." Plants of the World Online. Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. 2017 . The most important mallow care measure is watering. This is especially important for germination, after planting seedlings and during hot dry periods. If your mallow has yellow leaves, it may very well be thirsty. Malva L." Germplasm Resources Information Network. United States Department of Agriculture. 12 March 2007. In the garden bed, mallows harmonise wonderfully with plants from the mint family (Lamiaceae) such as motherwort ( Leonurus cardiaca), obedient plant ( Physostegia virginiana) and hyssop ( Hyssopus officinalis). They are also great companion plants for scabiosa ( Scabiosa), mullein ( Verbascum) and feverfew ( Tanacetum parthenium) which, when planted together, create a beautiful, colourful flowering meadow.
